Post-Nagoya Retirements

Recommended Posts

The NSK website (Japanese side) lists 11 rikishi as having retired since the basho. This does not include former sekitori rikishi TAKANOYAMA and ONIARASHI, whose retirements were announced earlier. The current list:

Sd1W SHINEIYAMA
Sd18E TAIGA
Sd23W DAISHONADA
Sd38W TOKIARASHI
Sd100W TAKASHOMA

Jd6E HODAKA

Jk7E YAMAMOTO
Jk12W KOTOKIMURA
Jk25E HIROKAWA

Banzuke-gai NIINA (1)
Banzuke-gai ISHIHARAYAMA

(1) He may never have set foot on a tournament dohyo. Sumo References has no record for him during Maezumo in March, he was 0-0-7 in May, and Banzuke-gai in July.

Do you have any information about reasons of Shineiyama's retirement?

If he was ranked and 0-0-7 in May, he obviously competed in maezumo in March. Anyway, the March maezumo results simply haven't been added to the DB yet.

He never recoverd substantially from his knee injury. He could not train properly after coming back from operation and I was surprised he made it back to Makushita. It was bad to see him train. I'm not sure but beyond that he injured the knee probably again ...!?

He was certainly beyond a big talent with huge potential but some tournaments in Juryo should have been within reach.

It is not totally unexpected, but still sad to see Shin'eiyama leave pro-sumo so soon. Despite the bad injuries, he was a good rikishi to watch and now is one more member of the "what if" group.

I must admit, Daishonada's intai strikes me as a very strange one. Wins his first two bouts of the basho, goes kyujo all of a sudden (no injury apparent in those bouts) and is retired two weeks later. Huh?

Something had to happen to a close family member or friend of Daishonada such that he is going to be needed permanently to take care of their affairs. It's also possible that he got and accepted a better job offer mid-basho (it didn't look particularly likely for him making sekitori, at least not any time soon), but that would seem bizarre to me.

Former Juryo Oniarashi's danpatsu-shiki was held at a restaurant in Tokyo yesterday. Yokozuna Harumafuji and Kakuryu were among the rikishi who attended.

And a speech from Oniarashi following a proper haircut and a change of clothes. The suit was a gift from Hakuho.
