Sumo Games Talk - Nagoya 2014

Recommended Posts

Ignored the Sunday alarm clock and missed the start of the NHK broadcast ( via jpPlayer).

After tuning into the action and checking the scores on Sumo DB, I found out to my surprise that I managed a perfect start in Sekitoto, going 14 of 14 in Juryo and also the first 2 bouts in Makuuchi, then Gagamaru came along and ended this streak at 16 consecutive winning picks.

Talking avout advanced jinxology, the streak ended just when I found out about this streak...

Then a different streak started, led by Okinoumi and Toyonoshima who destroyed my plans at Odd Sumo and probably most of the pre-basho games.

But at least I am part of Day 2 action over at the Chaingang.

Great minds think alike in Rotosumo (Randomitsuki...well we are the SB Yokozuna-tachi). Hoping for a co-yusho!

And I'm happy to see Tikozan off to a winning start in Quad! ;) ;) ;) I will be watching his/her basho with interest.

I got totally destroyed by Toyonoshima's loss; 3 others had him in Chain Gang so it wasn't a completely unique thought that it should have been in the bag for him, coming down off a poor basho against a relative newcomer that may have been pushed up too high. I think I had him picked to win for every other daily game as well, but at least in those I have a chance to continue.

Gurowake: I long ago learned to spread my idiocy out among the daily games and try not to put any eggs in one basket...no matter how tempting it may look! Toyonoshima and Okinoumi are very good examples of this...absolutely can't be trusted right now unless you're desperate.

Never pick a guy on Day 1 for anything important (Chain, Quad, etc.) if he left the previous basho with injury. ;-)

day 1

* in Sumo Game (0-1) I scored 8/10 with losers in 7th & 10th spot, but my opponent managed a perfect score, unlucky

* in Seki Quad (1-0) I managed a 4/4 by picking three guys from Juryo & a henka-ing Sanyaku

* ISP (0-1) was a tough call, but I really expected Endo to win this, the result might be bad for several games

* and survived day 1 in Chain Gang, going with T-zan

* RotoSumo could only have gone better in Sekiwake (Goeido) & M9-12 territory (Toyo), making me take off 7th with 100 points

* in Paper Oyakata, losses of Okinoumi in 3rd, Endo in 5th & Toyonoshima in 7th position makes me start 11th from 185 players

* CiberSumo sees my teams taking off 12th (28p), 46th (9p) & 99th (-7p) and with a score of 30p my heya in 3rd position

* in Fantasy Sumo I'm taking off 15th out of 165 players

* in Juryo Game, Shotenro, Tosayutaka & Kawanari were the main letoffs, a score of 8 points is just below average

* had 10 rikishi in action in Makushita Game, which I decided to give another try, opening with a rather poor 6-4

* couldn't open much better in PTYW, with a 5/5 and therefor tied lead

* 2-3 as far as my Banzuke Surfing picks goes, especially may have picked wrong side of Ms11 in wave 9

* for Long KK Streaks, the defeats of Goeido, Amuru, Tosayutaka, Onosho, Musashikuni & Komatsukasa is worrisome, as well as victories for Terunofuji, Sadanoumi & Tatsu ; I already smell a bad outcome here

* as for my own Sumo Market Game, transfering out Ishiura for Kawanari wasn't successful so far, too soon for more conclusions

All in all not a bad opening.

I fail to see my shikona in the Makushita Game standings though. Hope I didn't do something wrong ?

I don't agree with having your picks in one game affect what you pick in other games. You may say that "spreading them out" is different, but you'd be wrong. I don't intentionally plan on being high-variance, I make my picks from each game using the same information I have for each game and taking into consideration each game's attributes as well as my feelings regarding which way a match will go. If I end up being wrong on what I thought was the most likely outcome, on what basis could one say that making other picks would have been better? They're in general just as likely to fail, and according to my analysis, *more* likely to fail. That one match makes or breaks my entire day is not particularly relevant because I'm not relying on it for anything important. Diversifying your retirement stock portfolio makes sense. Eating a wide variety of healthy food makes sense. Buying life insurance to protect your family's future makes sense. Real Life Important Examples abound where you will give up expected value in order to increase the likelihood of a minimum payment. Making sure you don't get completely hosed by a single match? Not a big deal. There's no minimum payout I'm looking for - I want to maximize my expected value. There's different considerations at play with each daily game, and one should contemplate those considerations disconnected from whatever decisions are made for other games.

Now, hinging all of that on a guy coming off injury, that's another story and perhaps a lesson learned.

Haha! Well, that's me told! ;)

Not arguing with this, actually...but I play the games chiefly for enjoyment and I hate having my gaming day ruined by one single henka. And that's happened to me more times than I care to count!

I don't know whether it's relevant to ask this question in this thread, but does anybody know anything about the Ozumo Bingo Game. Usually, by this time it's up and running.

OBG is up and running.

Are you using the Superbanzuke page for accessing Ozumo Bingo results? I'm asking because I had given a wrong link to the results page until yesterday. It should be working now (try F5 to refresh the page if necessary).

No. I am usually using Exil's "Sumo Games Deadlines" page. It has always worked. Now for OBG there is nothing for 2014 Nagoya Basho.

Oh, I see. There is something amiss with the results overview page from OBG. Anyway, by replacing the string "201405" from the URL with "201407" you can see the results.

after 4 days

* 2-2 in Sumo Game thanks to a 7-7 victory over Kaiomitsuki (autant de saveurs que de siècles, santé (Cheers...) )

* 3-1 in Seki Quad, currently in 16th position with that

* 0-4 in ISP, quite a remarkable feat actually, so to all : stay clear of Goeido on day 5

* still surviving in Chain Gang, on the other hand

* in the lead in RotoSumo, with four 100+ scores in a row now

* improved to 10th position in Paper Oyakata, Endo in 5th & Chiyootori in 6th my worst picks at the moment

* CiberSumo : 4th (65p), 12th (52p) & 132th (-31p) taking my heya to 2nd position

* dropped to 37th position in Fantasy Sumo, still not bad of course

* climbed to an average 38th position in Juryo Game, Masunoyama, Shotenro & Daikiho mainly ruining my score

* if my Makushita Game entry would be valid, I would be scoring 20 points by now, tied 2nd

* also tied 2nd in PTYW, now that Myogiryu dropped one

* 4 positive, 6 neutral from my Banzuke Surfing picks, quite an improvement over day 1

* in Long KK Streaks, it's looking bad from the part of Kotokensei, Musashikuni, Komatsukasa, Terunofuji, Tatsu & Kizenryu

* only 5th from 5 active players in my own Sumo Market Game, on my way to my 2nd consolidation prize in a row ?

Even an improvement over my good opening day, so I cannot complain at all I guess. :-)

Sorry, can anyone tell me who is in charge of Chaingang?

It says I'm out but it's not possible. My pick since day 1 has been Ichinojo and he is undefeated. If my entry didn't make it my default pick is Ichinojo so I would have still picked him.

I can't enter for day 6, it shows me out after day 4 but I made a pick yesterday of Ichinojo.

Help please!! This is the first time I ever made it this far! Usually I'm out on day 1.

For the record my pick will still be Ichinojo for day 6

Thanks in advance!

Nakabi Summary

I only mention the good ones:

Turn The Tide

7-1 score after a perfect 7-0 start (one of only 4 players with that score), 3rd place overall

Sekitori Quad

7-1 score after a perfect 7-0 start (one of only 4 players with that score), 3rd place overall

Chaingang

8th place guaranteed, still in the race after Day 8 - got of the Tochinoshin-train briefly at the right time

Bench Sumo

6-2 at J13w and shared leader in Juryo, looking good not only to stay in Juryo but also to climb a bit higher on the banzuke

Sumo Game

5-3 at J4e rank, losing twice 6-6

Juryo Game (Day 6 & 8 results still missing)

65 points according to my calculation could be good for to a Top-Ten finish in Makuuchi

Sekitori Toto

5-3 shared 14th rank (with 18 other players), nice start but the second week always gives me trouble.

Paper Oyakata

9-6 ranked 56th (25th among the Juryo ranks) Okinoumi at the top spot and Endo at 3 are costing me many points here.

Upside Down Hoshitori & Roto Sumo

Looking good in both games and waiting for the UDH update and the divisional rankings in Roto. Also curious about the first scores at the Hoshitori game although I fear that I placed gaming bummers Okinoumi and Endo too high there as well.

after midway basho day

* 3-5 in Sumo Game losing 5-5 today due to having placed Jokoryu too low, or Myogiryu too high (Sigh...)

* 7-1 in Seki Quad, just having taken over the lead today !

* 2-6 in ISP, dead last, both points coming from Goeido, intai time ? (though it's a game requiring not a lot of time)

* went out on day 6 in Chain Gang

* still in the lead in RotoSumo, but having had bad scores on days 6 & 8

* dropped to 34th position in Paper Oyakata, as Myogiryu & Okinoumi are starting to cost me as well

* CiberSumo : 10th with my main team (103p), 34th with my worst (61p) & 113th (-30p) making my heya drop to 7th place

* 40th position now in Fantasy Sumo

* 21st in Juryo Game, rather weird that I keep climbing with quite some bad picks

* 38 points in Makushita Game which would be tied 2nd

* still tied 2nd in PTYW, after day 7 that was

* 5 positive, 3 neutral, 2 negative (Sasnoyama & Kotokensei) from my Banzuke Surfing picks

* as for Long KK Streaks, things haven't changed a lot

* and in my own Sumo Market Game, I'm still 5th out of 5 active players

Next update after day 12 ?

Absolutely no one got the special question on Norizo Cup, and I'm not surprised. Seeing Kotoshogiku at 8-0 after his performance last basho was indeed completely unexpected.

Have you seen his schedule for the first 8 days? He played only the two Komusubi rikishi. He'll start losing today and I don't think he'll last all 7 days. I expect him to go kujio soon after the grimace of pain on his face after yesterday's KK win.

There are certain patterns for Yokozuna/Ozeki which are almost never broken.

Try playing "Guess Kisenosato's Aite", and you'll see.
