Kintamayama 44,354 Posted June 18, 2004 (edited) There were 685 kensho in total at Natsu. The record is 856 kensho during Natsu 1992. Everyone at the NSK is pleased with these numbers, yet there is a call to limit the number of kenshos per bout. This, because of the problems caused by the record-breaking 40 kenshos we had during the Asa-Taikai bout. It seems that all these yobidashi walking around with these numerous kenshos were hampering the salt-throwing and general flow of the pre-match rituals to an extent that brought about limitation thoughts. "It's all very well that we're having many kenshos in a bout, but we have to think in advance and see the problems it may cause", says an NSK executive. In all of 1981, then-Yokozuna Chiyonofuji had 759 kenshos. Asashouryuu has 598 so far. He is expected to win a couple more.. "If we decide on a limit, then when it is reached, we can ask the sponsors to maybe spread around the kenshos a bit, " said the executive. "Good" problems for the NSK. Sasanishiki 57 Posted June 20, 2004 Too much of a good thing! I wonder if they run the risk of limiting kensho that they mighta ctually lose sponsors. These kensho sponsors are both regulars and those that come in when things are exciting or certain bouts have particular meaning. If the sponsors have then to be evened out, will they want to support a 'boring' bout. Imagine having to sponsor a Senshuraku bout between two makekoshi wrestlers. Given that option or saving your money, which would you choose?
Naganoyama 5,855 Posted June 20, 2004 Surely sponsors place money on rikishi they like. A Takamisakari supporter probably wouldn't place the money if he couldn't choose the bout. I think this idea is a lemon. Perhaps the NSK don't like to see foreign yokozuna walking away with so much dosh in their left hand. B-) Surely another way round the problem of yobidashi distracting the pre-bout rituals could be found if there was a will. Like delaying the start of the rituals for a minute until the yobidashi leave the ring when there is more than one ringload of kensho. This is not going to affect the day's proceedings by much as it doesn't happen too often.
Stephanoshima 0 Posted June 22, 2004 (edited) When demand exceeds supply, price should go up. Why don't they set a maximum number of kensho (say, 30) per match and auction them off if the number of kensho would exceed that limit? Of course, it's all Asa's fault, as always. :-( Edited June 22, 2004 by Stephanoshima
Cavewoman 0 Posted June 25, 2004 There was no hampering of pre-fight rituals at all. They just don`t want Asashoryu to have all this money. That is all. (Protesting...)
