Haru 2014 discussion thread **probable spoilers**

"Watching this kind of sumo, I just have to compare his sumo to Hakuhou's.." said Kitanoumi rijicho of the excellent head-on totally non-henka sumo of Harumafuji these last two days.

... and still no mono-ii.

I wonder if there are any records kept such as most/few mono-ii per basho...?

It's Kintamayama's fault. They probably got tired of being made to discuss about slippers and used cars :-P

Ha! It's not classical yokozuna sumo, by any means, but I don't see that Harumafuji has anything to prove. He's won six yusho, three of them zensho. Two of his yusho have come as a yokozuna while up against one of the greatest rikishi of all time. And according to reports, he is injured. If he has to dig into his technique draw and fight like Sekiwake Ama with that dodgy ankle, that's fair enough in my eyes: he's racking up the wins. Let's not forget that Hakuho himself is not averse to winning with hiki-waza from time to time, even when perfectly healthy (as he almost always is).

Also must give a shout out to Osunaarashi. Really good sumo from him this tournament (which comes as no surprise to me whatsoever as he has many great attributes) and he was unlucky against Endo, who was forced into a desperate defensive throw. Looking forward to seeing him in the jo'i soon and then we'll finally see his mettle tested.

Osunaarashi just tweeted that he went to the hospital to have the injury checked. He said the muscle is nearly torn through ("cut") and the doctor told him he needs to rest it. He said he is going to gambarize as long as he keeps breathing.

He also mentored that the doctor told him he was routing for Endo...

Ichinojo kachikoshi. Another win seals him promotion?

Tricky.. with currently only one clear demotion candidate from Juryo and ms1e Tosayutaka needing just one more win to seal his return to Juryo and ms1w Sakigake already with a 4-1 kachikoshi he needs a weak 2nd week from the bottom Juryo ranks and try to finish 6-1 himself.

But I am sure Asashosakari will soon look into the hole up-and-down thingy in all detail in his Promotion - Demotion thread.

The NHK announcer proudly announced the announcement that today is a sell-out (mai-in onrei), even though it is a weekday.

Kitataiki is fighting with a bum left leg. Normally, look for a kyujo in the next day or two. But he is one of the iron men, with only 2 missed matches in his 979 match career.

What the heck happened with Toyonoshima today? Tamawashi must have had something nasty for lunch.

That was some awesome work at the edges by both wrestlers, Musashiumi especially.

LOL! Good point.

In that match, it didn't look like Toki was offering any real offense. Looked to me like he was just holding on and waiting for Masu to tire out.

Absolutely! I think that, in the current lineup, he's the best rikishi never to have reached sanyaku (not counting the 'new guys' of course).

Anybody else rooting for Yoshikaze to earn his sanyaku debut?

Barring his one kyujo a few basho back, he has been the most impressively steady rikishi in the banzuke for a long time, never losing a lot, but never winning a lot either. I would be really happy if I can see him pull a second double digit result in a row :)

So, as noted in Kinta's video digest, Osunaarashi injured his right leg when he landed awkwardly after being pushed of off the dohyo. Medical recommendation is to drop out of the basho asap, but maybe he thinks otherwise after his furious 7-0 start.

Maybe he wants to fight through it - or at least try to get that one win for kachikoshi?

What's it gonna be...?

He has had 5 bashos in the joi-jin area which, schedule wise, is no different from being in sanyaku. He was MK in all 5 appearances. He is one of my favorite rikishi, and I wish him well, but he is not regular joi-jin material.

I tweeted him and suggested he go for it. He only has to win one more and can take off for the next two months.

He just tweeted "I won't be on dohyo today ."
