Gusoyama 99 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) What will Kotooshu do? Edited January 22, 2014 by Gusoyama
Raishu 208 Posted January 22, 2014 That is really tough to predict, IMHO. He has been serving as an Ozeki for 47 basho, so one could conclude that he will opt to retire as Ozeki. On the other hand, we haven't heard anything about kabu acquisition so far which makes it less likely that he is going to retire. I'm quite unsure about the option to stick with the Kyokai as Kotooshu Oyakata for three years. Maybe their plan is to abolish that when they get their new status ??? Replace 'Kotooshu' with 'Kotoshogiku' in your headline, and I'd declare a 100% NO! ;-)
Asojima 2,873 Posted January 22, 2014 I picked the sanyaku option, but would have preferred a joijin option. I believe that he will continue for about 6 months or until he drops out of the joijin (unlikely). He will then team up with Akebono, Wakakirin, et. al. He does not strike me as interested in becoming an oyakata.

Kuroyama 715 Posted January 22, 2014 He does not strike me as interested in becoming an oyakata. He doesn't strike me as being interested in anything in particular. But he does intend to stay in Japan, and it seems to me that acquiring a kabu would be the best way to guarantee himself a living.

Asashosakari 19,094 Posted January 22, 2014 I'd guess he's either quitting after this basho, or hanging on as a joi rikishi until he has a nightmare basho sometime down the road. Whether that would mean he's got 2 basho or 2 years left...who knows.
Vikanohara 171 Posted January 23, 2014 I also think he will continue a while as a Maegashira, maybe get to Komusubi/Sekiwake again, but eventually will retire when he drops to mid or low Maegashira.
Benevolance 2,484 Posted January 23, 2014 (edited) Given his obvious intention to stay in Japan, I can't imagine him not acquiring a kabu and becoming an oyakata. I think he'll keep wrestling until he's got the kabu secured and his ducks in a row. If he were a more prideful warrior, I could see him retiring at hitting a certain low rank, but...I think the kyokai imposed limit of "no ozeki in makushita" will be his basement. krindel 671 Posted January 23, 2014 i picked "other", because I believe his retirement will be more time-and-injury based rather than rank-based. Assuming he doesn't retire this basho, I think based on his injury record, he'll just fight a few more until his next injury, and then it will be scissors time... kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 24, 2014 I voted for intai when he drops out of the sekitori ranks one day. Right now, with the final torikumi, he might actually have a good shot at reclaiming the Ozeki rank. Haven't seen him that "hungry" in a while.

ScreechingOwl 343 Posted January 26, 2014 I expect Kotooshu to retire at the end of Hatsu (2014). He looks beat up -- and how many henka did he attempt this basho? (I'd have to go back and check them all, but at least three.) He's got his citizenship, and he should coach now while he's searching for a kabu. He hasn't looked like he's enjoyed himself for a few years, and I can't imagine things would be more fun as he drops down the ranks.
Asojima 2,873 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) I can't imagine things would be more fun as he drops down the ranks.Barring a significant injury, he should have no problem hanging out in the sekiwake/komusubi ranks with 7 to 9 win bashos. He was in desperate need of 10 wins this basho, but he can probably coast along nicely for a year or so if he chooses to do so. JariM 29 Posted January 26, 2014 Using a bit of fuzzy logic, I chose "Continue on as non-Ozeki Sanyaku, retire below Sanyaku". I don't think he can regain his Ozeki rank but he can surely stay around in the sekiwake or komusubi ranks for a while. I think he'll bow out after he drops down to the lower Maegashira ranks. But who knows?
