torquato 1,075 Posted January 15, 2014 WTF!!! This means all videos gone, also those Ustream had no rights in whatsoever... Grrrrrrrrr

yade 14 Posted January 15, 2014 Terminated after several copyright claims, including from Ustream Asia Inc.... is there a possibility, that the sumo kyokai did not know the consequences when they sign with ustream asia? this is a slap in the face of every sumofan worldwide. I really want to believe, the kyokai did not know what they did.... for me I am glad to save all vids I could possible get in the last years, so instead of Usteram Asia its now *oldies but goldies*.... another point: I hope araibira will let us know about any possible financial sanctions. I would be very happy to pay my part for having such a wonderfull time watching his vids....
umbriel2 13 Posted January 15, 2014 Is there any possibility to use an other video sharing website instead of youtube?
Usagi 31 Posted January 15, 2014 another point: I hope araibira will let us know about any possible financial sanctions. I would be very happy to pay my part for having such a wonderfull time watching his vids.... Me too. But I need to ge mastercard first, as paypal is nothing, I will use. Any chance of creating a mailinglist using rapidshare or something like that, to get the vids? Of course, this would keep those already interested maybe in it, but would still be a desaster to sumo's populairity. Any other options? Dailymotion, vimeo etc.? Benevolance 2,265 Posted January 15, 2014 also those Ustream had no rights in whatsoever... No, that's precisely wrong. The kyokai fully owns the rights to their product. They can do whatever they want with it. Whether it positively or negatively affects their product doesn't alter that legal right. The kyokai signed a contract with ustream to distribute the video feed, and as Fukurou pointed out, it's the kyokai that set the pricing model that ustream used. Ustream would be negligent under international law for not trying to protect the product they've been entrusted to distribute; if they fail to enforce their IP, then they weaken the Kyokai's IP rights under international treaty, and could be held responsible. In short, Ustream is doing what they're supposed to do. It really sucks. I think the kyokai is going about this very poorly. Araibira's channel was a wealth of sumo history - stuff that the kyokai themselves don't seem interested in retaining or distributing. They continue to offer no real viable competing product. But to say that ustream and the kyokai have no right to do what they are doing is absolute bullshit. Is there any possibility to use an other video sharing website instead of youtube? Most file hosting sites have similar legal obligations as youtube. I'm not aware of any sites that will ignore a takedown notice. If you wanted to do something, you'd probably need to do some sort of darknet. But that's only as trustworthy as the people you share with, because in most cases a takedown notice to a server/host/ISP will have the same results as what happened here. kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 15, 2014 Terminated after several copyright claims, including from Ustream Asia Inc.... Terminated after several copyright claims, including from Ustream Asia Inc.... major boo!!! now is the time for the next phase: massive shitstorm onto the kyokai social media outlets!
Asashosakari 16,827 Posted January 15, 2014 Sigh. The biggest loss is obviously in terms of (near) real-time and time-delayed watching, but I'm going to miss having such a handy bout video archive through the DB. I suppose I'm better off than most thanks to the (probably now no longer growing) BD-R stack of recordings I have here, but I can't exactly envision myself reaching for a disc every time I'd like to watch a random bout from some tournaments ago, so it's all the same really.
shumitto 416 Posted January 15, 2014 ...but I'm going to miss having such a handy bout video archive through the DB.... Same here. It was good to use that idle time of Sunday evening or any other day to watch some videos of an old basho or a rikishi no longer competing...
Jakusotsu 4,883 Posted January 15, 2014 Restricting the live stream, ah well, it's their business, I can live with that. But taking down years of bloody hard work in one fell swoop, that just makes me angry beyond believe. I hope I'll never have to find out that it was a community member who intentionally tipped them off.
Asashosakari 16,827 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) I hope I'll never have to find out that it was a community member who intentionally tipped them off.Surely nobody could actually stoop so low... In any case, this was pretty much to be expected after the first takedown notice was filed. :-( And Youtube doesn't discriminate between non-offending and offending content on a channel, they just close it altogether after a few strikes against it. Asojima 2,835 Posted January 15, 2014 Elements in the kyokai are known to have been using the clips in the database for training and other purposes. If it's any consolation, they have lost out too.

If it's any consolation, they have lost out too. if this is the case than it might be a good time to launch a charge system for using the db - of course only for people living in japan... no just kidding ;-)
araibira 682 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Anybody knows if Araibira was personnaly affected? Is he in trouble or in need of any assistance / donations / anything that we could do? Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. I've prepared for this day since my first upload. I'm surprised they took this long to shut me down. Bringing sumo to all you wonderful people was a LARGE portion of my life. I loved every minute of it and I regret nothing. If anything, maybe this is the straw that breaks the camel's back, and hopefully the sumo community will rally. What I hope people will get out of my work is the capability of what one person can achieve. I'm just a normal guy who did something no one else tried. Anyways, aloha everyone and take care! I hope I'll never have to find out that it was a community member who intentionally tipped them off. The Kyokai might be out of touch, but they're not blind. Araibira was doing his remarkable work for over two years, the videos were all publicly available. Heck, even Shikihide-beya's Twitter account (which is followed by the Kyokai) posted araibira's video of Momochizakura's bout on Shonichi. This wasn't something done covertly in the shadowy corners of the internet. Surely nobody could actually stoop so low... Any idea if he could recover all the old videos from when the stream was free, if he agreed to the deletion of the claimed Ustream content? Or is it simply all gone regardless? Pandaazuma 1,270 Posted January 15, 2014 Tossers. Absolute tossers, anyone involved in this travesty. Araibara has been brilliant...what a legend...and the ridiculous thing is that he actually wants to continue doing this. How about not having a YouTube channel but just doing what Kajiyama used to do? I think he basically hooked his PC up to the cable or satellite or whatever and let people watch the content directly. I don't know about the technical feasibility of this, but is it not worth trying? This is an utter disaster for the foreign sumo fan community outside Japan. Fascists. All they had to do was make it affordable...but $120 a basho should not be paid to these people on principle. And did I read $50 for the last day?? Jesus Christ! Is there any way around this?
Jakusotsu 4,883 Posted January 15, 2014 Is there any way around this?Yup. Realize they actually are just fat men in diapers and move on. Sorry, feeling bitter right now.

I don't know about the technical feasibility of this No way! These times are gone long ago. Maybe araibira should contact the NSK after the basho sometime in Feb. through official channels and ask about the possibility of going on with what he was doing in the past. Perhaps not as an almost live feed, but with a certain delay not to interfere with the stream service... At least it's worth a try to see where the NSK stands... Maybe there's a way to find a solution, when we calmed down a bit. This is not only about the outrageous fees for a poor quality live stream anymore. Araibiras great work had its distinct value of its own. Kudos to him.
