The Iwatsuki ancient style dohyo-iri - for boys till 6th grade - is a Saitama folk custom cultural asset. An autumn festival that takes place each year close to Oct. 21st., every 2nd year the day before the Respect for the Elderly Day. The kids follow the gyoji when they enter the dohyo and leave in a special walking way, called yakko.

YouTube search is usable again - but either there were not many interesting videos in the last 2 weeks or YT has deleted them already - at least this one was good - small kids in red, earlier grades in purple, the elder grades are sanyaku

Same cast as every year since 1999, both Ichirikizan 一力山 and gyoji.

Like every year it gets reported and it is held at the shrine at least since 1364. The acting Ichirikizan is 40 now and as staff member of the Imabari municipal office was anxious because he didn't train much. He plans to find a style with which he can continue till 75.

Same procedure as every year: uwatenage for a 2-1 win of the spirit vs. Ichirikizan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1fI2FMtneI

Ichirikizan: "I want to continue for 30 more years - and some day I want to win."

In Takaoka-city, the 29th Fushiki-basho ozumo was on Sep. 2nd. This ozumo has a makuuchi (general) division, with banzuke and sanyaku - k/s/o - and preparations the whole year, reported by the local paper, which is the promoter.

For the event of 120 years since the opening of the port of Fushiki and the 30th Fushiki-basho ozumo (will be on Sep. 1st), a dohyo-iri by their present  top rikishi  took place. The ozeki west did an unryu style and ozeki east Takaokashinzan (from Wakakusa-beya)  a shiranui style dohyo-iri - with attendants and gyoji and specially made kesho mawashi sets, showing cranes. Their maegashira Kotetsuzan in the end did a yumitori-shiki. http://www.hokkoku.co.jp/subpage/T20190729202.htm

I thought afterwards that the gyoji is clearly ozumo style – I could have put it there as well.

But I thought to use this topic later for other Local Sumo Customs – each week there is naki-zumo etc. reported from somewhere or kids doing sumo. Many traditional ceremonial sumo tournaments from all over Japan are in the local news as well - that at last clearly qualifies as proper ama-zumo.

Hitori-zumo should be an ancient custom, but if Oda Nobunaga introduced first the dohyo boundaries and then the gyoji, the present form is clearly a more modern version.

(As expected that Youtube history channel is gone already – a pity I only had the time to watch the 2 sumo related videos).

Edit: now here: http://www.youtube.com/user/RekishiMystery/videos

Alas, that channel seems to have deleted or made private all of its videos. :(

Recently the baby dohyo-iri has become rare, canceled due to Corona, last year also at this event, the 74th Matsuura adults sumo (seinen-zumou) in Karatsu city, Saga, on the 31st. http://www.saga-s.co.jp/articles/-/762456

This amateur rikishi holds his grandson, wearing a kesho mawashi found 2 years ago at the place of a friend, who then gave it to him. It was in an akeni box, as usual for any kesho mawashi, with the name of an amateur rikishi of old on it, used for ritual sumo events at shrines (miya-zumou).

the usual ones at the event: the baby has its kesho mawashi

Another traditional event that gets cancelled because too few want to participate:

I was sure I had posted about it before, but it vanished (into the void) like quite a lot of my posts over the years

After 4 years Karasu-zumo - mimicking crows - took part at the Kamigamo shrine (world heritage site) in Kyoto again, to pray for good health. This shinto ritual comes from the mythical 3 legged crow that led the army of Jinmu tenno to victory. 2 shrine parishioners with eboshi 烏帽子 - written crow cap - court gear perform the ritual. Afterwards primary school kids do sumo. The event takes place each year on Sep. 9th (Chrysanthemum festival)

Unfortunately the actual sumo parts of the kids are mosaicked out here:
