Supported Rikishi Banzuke

Recommended Posts

The NSK has started a rikishi support banzuke. You can vote for the rikishi you support, 3 rikishi each day, till the basho ends, 19h senshuraku.

Click on the zabuton, the votes are shown and the rikishi sorted according to them, page 2 with rank 16-42.

Maybe an English page will appear later.

Hmm... The results so far are quite surprising...

First, I find it interesting that the Japanese crowd seem to have started shifting their hopes away from Kisenosato to Chiyotairyu and Miyogiryu (50% more votes? wow...)

Second, I find it very interesting that Kotooshu is the lead foreigner of the list. Assuming there wasn't a huge influx of Bulgarian voters, its quite surprising...

Third, Homasho remains still surprisingly popular, despite his current year troubles...

And finally, Hakuho is not only 15th, but behind Aran? :-O . I guess people either think he doesn't need support, or they are VERY fond of henkas...

Jokoryu 4th from the bottom?.. Well. Either Japanese people totally gave up on him or he's a very dislikeable person.

Other stunning results to me, as to how bad they place, are Kotoshogiku and Toyonoshima.

Having 2 journeymen mongols on the bottom 3 is no surprise though.

Not knowing Japanese, what flavor of support the users are asked for? Are they supposed to vote for the one to

- root for

- cheer for

- sympathize with

- support (cause he is in need)

- think will improve much

- think is the best (apparently not)

?

I took it as whoever you liked most, without reading anything on the page. I’m spamming Hakuhō, Endō and Kyokutenhō votes each day. If Kyokutenhō and Hakuhō had better placement I might’ve picked some other rikishi, I’m surprised Hakuhō (and even Harumafuji) are so far down; I guess the Japanese prefer to support the underdogs.

Darn, and I almost made a "half of Ossetia must been voting for him" quip on Wednesday after he'd moved up from 14th to 11th just a few hours after Krindel's post...what an opportunity wasted.

Might it be, as Akinomaki indicates at the beginning of the thread, that this supporters banzuke is purely for use during the basho? An online version of the form given to those attending.

I can just visualise the guy who runs the online stuff for the NSK, looking at his screen at the activity on this banzuke, shaking his head and muttering

in a completely dismissive tone of voice, gaijins!

(Eh?) If you're talking about the fighting spirit survey, that's a) something completely different and b) done by mobile phone voting, not printed forms.

I think they intended to have one supporters created banzuke for each real banzuke/basho, including the effect of rikishi performances during the basho. Maybe with this development they scrap the thing for further basho: Aran is pulling away from the field with a difference to the 2nd that is double the number of votes that Hakuho alone has.

They should have thought better... Anonymous (as in not registered user) polls on the internet need only one guy bored enough to take a couple of hours to code a voting robot to screw them up completely...

I just noticed that if you use incognito mode you can vote as much as your boredom allows.....

Not cool.

Was Aran ashamed about his fabricated lead in the supporters banzuke (nearly as much votes as all other rikishi combined) and thus had this miserable result this basho ?

Final results are on the page now.

2 Kyokutenho and 3 Endo have quite a large number of votes and then a mix of lower ranked rikishi, quickly going down in the number of votes.

Though the result from last time wasn't commented at all, a new one was started, same page, same conditions. You now have to enter a given 3 capital letter code to protect against automatic voting robots (stays the same for all 3 votes - we will see how much that helps), but you can still vote as much as you like when you open the site in private anonymous mode.

Juryo rikishi can't be voted for, but weren't they in the ballot last basho ?

This basho Satoyama was top all the way and Takayasu 2. In the end Kakuryu overtook Endo to finish 3rd. Kotooshu was deleted from the support banzuke.

It just says support, but I guess people vote for the exotic ones or attractive in some particular way. Or all of the abovementioned flavors of support.

I myself expected Endo to be on top since when I scroll over Japanese sites, it's all about Endo magazines, Endo commercials, Endo photos...

And yeah, yokozunas being in the bottom is a bum.

Funny start this basho: new Ozeki Goeido at the top

http://www.sumo.or.jp/ouen/ranking/top.html

Japanese old hope Kisenosato last, Kotoshogiku, the top Japanese on the banzuke, second to last.

http://www.sumo.or.jp/ouen/ranking/all

Reminding you - press on the guys you like and your vote will count as well- you get three votes per day. After you click your pick you will get a box to enter the three English letters that appear to verify you are not a robot. Join the fun!!
