Akinomaki 41,856 Posted August 31, 2013 Naruto-oyakata scouting 3rd year high school judo athlete Daisuke Fujiwara, who will start at the Haru basho. With coach Hikaru Miwa.
Asashosakari 20,297 Posted September 6, 2013 (edited) Naruto-oyakata scouting 3rd year high school judo athlete Daisuke Fujiwara, who will start at the Haru basho. Most recently scouted in early August at the "44th All-Japan Part-Time and Distance Learning High Schools" judo competition...do those schools not get to take part in the regular athletic circuits for high schools? Very interesting/odd. Shikama Technical HS, which Fujiwara captains, won its 6th straight team title. Fujiwara had said he'd only go Ozumo if he won the individual title in his category (75+ kg) there - which he did. Apparently coach "Hot-blooded Yankee" Miwa and the Shikama club were profiled in a TV documentary for the unusual turnaround it has undergone from rag-tag group of 3 athletes in 2006 (when Miwa arrived) to a national powerhouse of almost 40 students. Naruto-oyakata caught the documentary a year ago and contacted the club about their top talent Fujiwara afterwards. Akinomaki 41,856 Posted December 17, 2013 From Sapporo Toho High for Hakkaku-beya: Nakamura (18, 184cm, 105kg, wrestling background). He wanted to become a police officer, but the heya's general manager Hasegawa scouted him after watching him at the Inter-high championships in the wrestling team and -120kg category. http://www.hokkaido-np.co.jp/news/sapporo/510594.html
Akinomaki 41,856 Posted December 28, 2013 Hakuho gave 3 Miyagino-beya new recruit hopefuls a training lesson, lending his chest in 3 bouts each and as well to the new recruit for the Hatsu basho, Tottori Johoku's Harada: Middle school 3rd years Kawamoto (15), Yamamoto (15) and Watanabe (14) came during their winter vacation. Yamamoto is the younger brother of the heya's sandanme Kiryu: “The first time I did sumo with a rikishi. This being the yokozuna made me happy. He is really strong and didn't move. First of all I want to surpass my brother.” http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/f-sp-tp3-20131228-1237211.html

Kotoviki 16 Posted January 11, 2014 Naruto-oyakata scouting 3rd year high school judo athlete Daisuke Fujiwara, who will start at the Haru basho. Fujiwara had said he'd only go Ozumo if he won the individual title in his category (75+ kg) there - which he did.Apparently coach "Hot-blooded Yankee" Miwa and the Shikama club were profiled in a TV documentary for the unusual turnaround it has undergone from rag-tag group of 3 athletes in 2006 (when Miwa arrived) to a national powerhouse of almost 40 students. Naruto-oyakata caught the documentary a year ago and contacted the club about their top talent Fujiwara afterwards. My coworker is in charge of this tournament every year. So I'm always lucky to be a guest and I bring a couple of rikishi along as well to scout out the judo guys. These types of schools have to have their own competition aside from the regular schools competition. They do this because the schools are completely separated. Also theses types of schools which include Tokyo Metropolitan night high schools (as I teach at), company owned schools (treated as correspondence), military type high schools and other types of distance learning do not get nearly as much training time as regular schools so the odds are in regular school students favor. Also an interesting fact is that both sisters of Kasugayama beya's Matsubayama are champs in the girls division of this tournament! One has now graduated. The first time I saw them compete I knew they had to be related. After it was over I was going to go talk to them but they came to me first and asked if I was Viki as they'd seen my pictures through him before. Small world!

Akinomaki 41,856 Posted February 13, 2014 A really big middle school student to enter Takadagawa-beya (of Akinoshima): Shōto Suzuki (15, 195cm, 140kg) from Ōiso, Kanagawa, baseball pitcher without sumo experience. Nonetheless 14 heya wanted to get him. In summer he had a test training at Miyagino-beya after meeting Hakuho at the Fujisawa jungyo in April. He thought about a baseball career or continuing school but: “I have got the opportunity to see many heya, I humbly chose the one with the most rigid keiko. In that environment I want to grow. I have no regrets towards baseball.” http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/p-sp-tp3-20140213-1256883.html

Akinomaki 41,856 Posted February 16, 2014 Monomane(imitator)-talento Krokke's 2nd son Ayumi Takigawa (18, 172cm, 130kg) enters Sadogatake-beya. He started sumo in elementary 2, has reached no higher amateur results. The oyakata noticed him 6 years ago at a tournament at which his first son took part. He aims to start as Kototakigawa. Gaburi-yori is his speciality, which means of course his ideal is Kotoshogiku and as a reasonably good imitator himself, he'll try to imitate the ozeki, being able to watch him from close-by. http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/p-sp-tp3-20140216-1258315.html
