Mawashi Question

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure where to post this.

I've been looking at Japanese paintings and prints from the 18th Century and older of Sumo Wrestlers and they appear to be wearing a slightly different version of the modern day Mawashi. I was just wondering if there are any existing examples of old mawashis (photographs etc..) I'm a historian and I like to learn about the material cultures and their various changes. Any info or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The wrestlers in the first picture seem to be wearing fundoshi.

A mawashi is nothing more than a fundoshi adapted to such a form that the techniques used in sumo do not cause extreme discomfort. I know I wouldn't want to be picked up by the waistband in a regular fundoshi, and I don't even weigh as much as Takanoyama.

I have my own idea about how the mawashi developed, and why sagari are used, but since I have virtually no information to go on but old prints and it's a frank guess, I'm not going to say anything about it.
