A reminder that 3 sumo programs are coming up in the next 24 hours on NHK World (and also one remaining repeat of SPORTS JAPAN). For the broadcast time in your time zone (if the site can recognize it from your browser), check the NHK WORLD TV TV Schedule or the sumo page http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/, at the bottom under related programs.
The pages of the programs for some reason show only UTC times:

The best pre-basho program: BS Fuji Ozumo gappuri soken - still with ex-Kotonishiki, but now as Asahiyama-oyakata:

Watching Amakaze's gourmet report segment is always fun, but makes me hungry (Eating...)

Again this part made it to YouTube

and again this time:

Of course also this time, Takekaze joins in

It's Take-sanpo! Why do I love this so much? Now that he is he most senior participant for Nagoya I'm definitely cheering for him (First prize...)

NHK World's Sports Japan has resumed to do the basho digest regularly, the Nagoya basho this Friday/Saturday: Only half of the program is sumo though - but Ura is on! http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sportsjapan/201608220600/

Quote

The July Grand Sumo Tournament attracted huge crowds who were keen to see if Ozeki Kisenosato could deliver a performance worthy of promotion to the highest rank of Yokozuna and become the first Japanese Grand Champion in over a decade. The powerful Hakuho, however, was out to stop him and claim his third consecutive title. We also introduce an up-and-coming young wrestler who makes up for his short stature with a diverse collection of advanced techniques.

Much on TV today - the basho is only a week away. One was a walk around Ryogoku, with Shibatayama-oyakata, showing what new one might encounter in the kokugikan during the basho - some trivia about the rikishi as well, mainly with jungyo scenes.

Nice program the other day about an amateur sumo women's European champion from Poland on a visit to Japan.

Before and after the training with Japanese female champions at a university club, the making of the shimekomi (silk basho mawashi of a sekitori) (at 8:10) and in the end (at 43:55) a visit to Sadogatake-beya are the highlights of the 1h video.

Among today's sumo on TV was a repeat of this, and maybe 10 channels have uploaded it to YouTube already. At last I found one version in 720p HD:

A program from yesterday on NTV about Hakuho and Kyokuranzan/Kyokutenzan, one of the first 6->4->3 Mongolian rikishi, but the least known of the 3, who even though never reaching sekitori still became Japanese. http://www.ctv.co.jp/mongol/

the 6 as shindeshi

mainly Mongolian with Japanese subs - CMs were not removed:

And now for the first time as shisho of his own heya. Likely again only the gourmand part will make it to YouTube, and BS Fuji so far isn't among the known Vaughn streams.

I expect the videos to vanish within hours: Today's guest at "Tetsuko no heya" was Kitanofuji - with scenes from appearances on that talk-show by him in 1977 and by Chiyonofuji in 1981 - a glimpse from his song "neon mujou" ネオン無情, for which I only find cover versions ...

Today one (8min) of Tsurube's kanpai visits was to Shikoroyama-beya: he only met with the o-kami-san, injured niban-deshi (2nd to enter the heya) Bariki, with hair damage but the will to go on (he'll drop off the banzuke if he doesn't appear this basho) and then with ichiban-deshi ex-Teraofuji, who works as a nursery school teacher and learns for a qualification, and to go to the nearby school he is still allowed to stay in the heya. The oyakata was at a training camp in Niigata. Then Teraosho (180kg) arrived - and just when they were about to leave, newer member Teraowaka (18) - which puts the whole thing to from before the Aki basho.

At 25:00 another short heya appearance and walk with Teraowaka - the 2nd highlight at 1:01:30 (3m): ex-Daishi, the singer shows his snack bar (started 2 years ago) and jinku singing talent.

For the new year ozumo job tunes special, will they still feature Aminishiki & Toyonoshima in the panel?

I bet Toyonoshima will have a lot more dirt to spill on people.

Check out Grand Sumo Review 2016 on December 26th and 31st. We shot it in the old Mihogaseki Beya.

I was just wondering: It was okay for the two of you to wear shoes on the dohyo? Or was that just because it's "only" the dohyo inside a beya?

Its amazing how you (John) can be featured in a internationally televised program, Yet you translate your charisma so well onto your YouTube videos. You stood as an equal with Hiro and Raja, yet you also stood as an equal with Jason and Moti.  In effect, you have what most people in your position lack, "Humble Confidence".

2017 looks to be exciting, and I look forward hearing AND seeing you throughout the year. Aloha!!
