He was born on December 3rd 1925 and the 1936 Haru basho was in January - so he would have just turned 10 years old. Was it common for gyōji (and possibly other urakata) to join at such young ages back then? It was, especially for gyoji: they joined as mame-gyoji - something changed in 1947, they were made to go to school. But also rikishi joined at a much younger age. Middle school graduation became obligatory in 1973 1

Seiyashi 4,105 Posted July 6, 2023 Not sure if this is the right place (would be glad to start another thread if not), but Mitakeumi's father has just passed away on 5 July. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202307060000728.html Ōmichi Haruo was 74. The cause of death is not stated. Mitakeumi was allowed to return to Kisō town immediately to be mourner-in-chief, although Dewanoumi oyakata said that he would be back in time for shōnichi.

Kintamayama 45,374 Posted March 18, 2024 Myobudani (we used to call him Danny) was my favorite rikishi growing up. He was somehow different than the run of the mill rikishi. Him and Wakachichibu. And Tsurugamine (Terao's dad), the Tamawashi of back then. Other than Taihou and Kashiwado of course, who were idolized beyond recognition.
