Sumo Reference: 8th Yokozuna name reading?

Recommended Posts

Quite by accident, I noticed that the name of the 8th Yokozuna is given as Shiranui Nagiemon in the Doitsubase (http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=3317&l=e and also the hiragana on the Japanese version) but as Shiranui Dakuemon on the NSK website ( http://sumo.goo.ne.jp/eng/kiroku_daicho/mei_yokozuna/rekidai.html , and also the hiragana on the Japanese version http://sumo.goo.ne.jp/kiroku_daicho/mei_yokozuna/rekidai.html ). Is a correction needed?

Yes, it should be

Shiranui Pokemon

(suimasen, couldn't resist) :-)

Ja.wiki seems to indicate that there's no clear consensus on how his name was actually read.

Yeah, I guess that would be a bit of a puzzler if it was only ever recorded in kanji.
