Juryo Promotions - 2013 Nagoya

Recommended Posts

Gyoji promotions: no new Kimura Shonosuke for the moment - after 7 years (Haru 2006) again a basho without the top tate-gyoji.

I thought the gyoji hierarchy was pretty much a straight promotion up as the guy ahead of you retires?

Sometimes they're delaying the "big" promotions for reasons of appearance, in this case probably because the Kimura Shonosuke-to-be only became Shikimori Inosuke last November.

Anyone know how old the current Shikimori Inosuke is? He looks older than the guy retiring, but taking a Wakakoyu to the face probably ages a person a few years.

He's 63, his last basho as gyoji will be Haru 2015 if he serves till his mandatory retirement.

Taking the red from the Egyptian flag would have been the cooler choice. Black's boring!

OT: Are sekitori allowed to wear a white silk mawashi during a Honbasho? Haven't seen one so far.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember Sekiwake Arase wearing a white one back in the 70s.

Hmmm... I remember him in black. One of us is getting senile.

I saw older photos of him wearing black (older - meaning pre 1976).

You are correct. Mark Schilling says in Sumo: A Fan's Guide that he wore a cream coloured mawashi for one tournament only, and that he is the only rikishi ever to do so.

It must be you... ;-)

Gyoji promotions: no new Kimura Shonosuke for the moment - after 7 years (Haru 2006) again a basho without the top tate-gyoji.

Effective on the date of banzuke publication (June 24th), juryo gyoji Kimura Akijiro will become a makuuchi gyoji, makushita Shikimori Tamasaburo will move up to juryo.

Just as new sekitori must pick a colour for their honbasho mawashi, newly promoted Juryo gyoji Shikimori Tamasaburo has to choose which colour his new honbasho outfit will be.

Follow-up to the above - Shikimori Tamasaburo in his new honbasho outfit, complete with Juryo-rank green and white tassles.
