I’m curious: are these dohyo-iri ceremonies at temples ticketed events or can spectators just watch for free?

Shrine and temple grounds are open to the public, they have sometimes closed areas or rooms, but I never heard of a dohyo-iri that took place there - those events are always for free, and most (2 third or more) are at shrines (Shinto), not at temples (Buddhist)

I’d be up for it. Lined up in the wee hours once for sumo tickets in sub zero and whipping winds and surely wished I’d I’d brought a sleeping bag

Anyone know why Takayasu was not on hand for the dezu-iri (i.e., tour of the shrine grounds)?

Tochinoshin was included despite technically having lost his Ozeki status on Day 15 of the Harubasho.  One might conclude that that was because the new bazuke had not yet been released.  But then Takakeisho was included in the procession despite not yet appearing on a banzuke as an Ozeki.  If the banzuke is the holy grail of sumo status, then Takakeisho should perhaps not have been invited to join in.  Yes, Takakeisho had had a formal promotion ceremony prior to the dezu-iri, but Tochinoshin by the same token had lost his status prior to the dezu-iri, just that there is no similar ceremony for Ozeki demotions.  I know I'm nitpicking but ...

Till the banzuke was published today, Tochinoshin was still ozeki. For a new ozeki or yokozuna it is a bit special: he is ozeki already when the banzuke is decided upon at the banzuke hensei kaigi and the kyokai messenger tells them the decision, also before the banzuke is published.

Takayasu was simply kyujo at the start of the jungyo.

Maybe Kakuryu as a nice gesture falls ill just before it and Hakuho replaces him.

Hakuho on the 3rd had a dohyo-iri at the renge-in tanjo temple oku-no-in in Tamana city, special with Hokutofuji and Okinoumi, afterwards the 3 did sumo with kids

Today was the traditional new year dohyo-iri at the Meiji shrine. Due to rain below a roof, and due to the new scandal without Ishiura as attendant - instead Terutsuyoshi was tsuyu-harai together with Enho as tachi-mochi for Hakuho.

After 3 years there will be again a yokozuna dohyo-iri at the Ise shrine, next Sunday, April 3rd, ending the kyujo of Terunofuji. https://www.sanspo.com/article/20220328-FF5OV6623RKSFKR4ZVLM7NGJWE/

The right heel and left knee of Terunofuji are obviously not that bad, reported was one month of recovery needed.

Asked about the injury, Terunofuji gave the usual short response, "Daijoubu desu" - it's OK

Dohyo-iri at the NSK's Nomino Sukune shrine in the neighborhood of the kokugikan today (they also have a shrine directly at the kokugikan), tachi-mochi Terutsuyoshi, tsuyu-harai Midorifuji. A new yokozuna does it before his first Tokyo basho, but it was delayed due to Corona.

Interesting - so does this mean that Terunofuji perfers Midorifuji over Takarafuji? Perhaps he just wanted Midorifuji to get that experience?

We won’t know until tomorrow. Normally, they would pick the higher ranking pair. Otherwise, Midorifuji would not have time to prepare for his bout.

Hakuho picked the same two early last year. Maybe it's more photogenic with two short rikishi?

First the ceremony in the shrine, with Hakkaku and the 2 top shimpan - Terunofuji's name is engraved on the stone there, but not yet on the yokozuna stone at the Tomioka Hachimangu - at least there was no report yet
