Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted May 20, 2013 Osunaarashi's power oshi attack was very successful so far, but of course it does have its limit as stronger rikishi just won't budge. Endo and Wakamisho today were two opponents strong enough to easily withstand the thrusts, but the Egyptian still won both bouts showing new skills, today getting a moro-zashi and actually utilizing it skillfully for the yorikiri win, avenging the sole loss last basho. With Wakamisho out of the way he now has a decent chance at a 7-0 which would lead to juryo promotion without the bothersome but instructional hassle in the promotion zone. Both lead makushita are in an even better position, needing only one more win as Seiro and Yoshiazuma are 3-2 with wins today. Well, Seiro was lucky to get the isamiashi reversion of the gyoji's decision (of course correct, but often the shinpan don't bother) and unlucky to have a limp going after the bout. The two Ms4 aite are both 2-3 and possibly out of the race while Hochiyama definitely is out with his fourth loss. Sakigake also is 2-3 (after a 0-3 start) and at his rank a 4-3 might be enough. Amuru also lost by isamiashi and I think in his case it was a lot closer and a tori-naoshi might have been a better decision - especially with the Russian being much stronger than 19-year-old Daieisho who now is bouncing back strongly after the two-basho setback (wow, those demotions sure were crazy this time, he had a bigger demotion with 3-4 than last basho with a 2-5). Given his great Ozumo start, 28-7 in five basho to Ms33 before that setback, I think he can be considered the yusho favourite now. Due to a scheduling quirk Takagenji avoided Shineiyama, but to no avail, he lost to returning Hokutoo while Shineiyama beat Hamagami, the lowest ranked unbeaten jonidan rikishi. aderechelsea 124 Posted May 20, 2013 (edited) i am betting on Sasanoyama for the yusho. His tachi-ai mechanics work so perfectly this basho and he could beat Osunaarashi for example. He comes from underneath and he has enough power to push up his aite into a rather uncomfortable standing position. A good yori-guy could make a throw after the initial contact but his style (and power) are not so easily challenged but an oshi-sumo rikishi. so yeah ... i am predicting a Sasanoyama yusho. btw ... he is MK free in all the bashos he took part in. This is something .... Edited May 20, 2013 by aderechelsea
krindel 671 Posted May 20, 2013 (edited) I have to hand it to Osunaarashi, he surprised me with his last two wins, he definitely has been learning to cope with more difficult opponents. I was remembering how he lost to the physically weaker Iwasaki once he grabbed his belt a few basho back to understand how much he learned since. Edit: And while I would love to see him in Juryo next basho, I agree with Doitsuyama that its quite possible that another basho in top makushita might be more beneficial for him. shumitto 418 Posted May 21, 2013 Without having had the experience of watching Osunaarashi training (I saw him only once in person) I have to say he looks pretty ripe for Juryo. On the other hand, Sasanoyama is having an excellent basho and maybe the Egyptian will have to stay put for a while.
kenzo 5 Posted May 21, 2013 Oosunaarashi's abilities are only surprising if you haven't watched him in keiko over the past couple of years. He has always been strong in yotsu and actually preferred it initially. His tsuki-oshi skills are something he really only developed after coming to Japan. Of late his sumo has shown a lot more natural flow and maturity though. I disagree with the statement he needs more time in makushita. He already wins more than he loses against makuchi rikishi such as Oiwato and Daido and goes about 50-50 against Takanoiwa. In fact the stress of being a lower ranker for foreign rikishi, especially those that don't return home can eventually build to such a point that it adversly affects their sumo. Culture shock is tough for anyone moving to Japan. For a rikishi it tends to be magnified. Sekitori life, with the independence it brings can help alleviate that. He is 1-1 against Sasanoyama in keiko by the way. As knowing Osunaarashi since 2008 inside and out , I agree with Nishinoshima's comments 100%.He really is an exceptional and talented youngman and his doing his best everyday...Of course there will always be people who will say he should do it so or he should be more so...etc etc . But I have been brought up in a culture where people who can ....do it and those who cant just talk about it.....The best with this youngman is still to come...The most possitive points will be when he reaches Sekitori he will receieve the rest in his life that will enable him to concentrate on Sumo and give his body time to rest from the daily work at the behya....Watch this space.....
