Hakuho stopped Toyonoshima's run as the short guy tried the same tactics which proved successful against Kakuryu and Harumafuji but Hakuho ably deflected the attack and pulled the joi-jin regular down to stay undefeated. And to make the rich richer no less than six of the eight pursuers lost today, most notably the two sekiwake Goeido (now 0-5 against Takayasu) and Baruto (getting thrown around a lot lately). Only ozeki Kotoshogiku (improbably two wins clear of the next best ozeki) and Okinoumi were able to stay two wins behind the leading yokozuna, and both aren't exactly a big threat for the yusho. Eleven rikishi follow at 6-3, among them Fujiazuma who recovered nicely from the 2-3 start, and of course Harumafuji who is just 4-3 against maegashira opponents this basho and likely faces his last kinboshi danger for the basho tomorrow with Shohozan.

Azumaryu is the sole juryo leader again as he beat Tenkaiho with hatakikomi while Asasekiryu was overpowered by Tamaasuka in a yorikiri loss. Nionoumi and Kyokushuho also are 7-2 with some more makuuchi promotion candidates improving to 6-3 with Asahisho, Daikiho, Chiyootori and Homarefuji, the last three possible shin-makuuchi. Hochiyama and Miyabiyama are down to 2-7 and look like the weakest rikishi in the division.
