New recruits for Haru 2013

Recommended Posts

Ama Yokozuna Endou (Nichidai 4th year, 22) will be joining Oitekaze beya, it was disclosed today. He has 11 titles under his belt these last 4 years, including the all-Japan Championships, qualifying for a Makushita 10 tsukedashi debut. He is from the same town as the Oyakata. "Since i was little, i knew that if I ever turned pro, I would join this heya. I'd like to be like Ozeki Kakuryuu with his tsuki-oshi moving to yotsu skills. My target is Wajima!!" he said, saying he would like to become the second college - background Yokozuna.

Oitekaze: My, it's hot in here. Lucky I've got this lad to lean on.

Endo: If that fat man doesn't take his hand off my shoulder, I'm going to take it off for him.

Did Oitekaze buy one of Konishiki's old suits?

Or is he breaking in a new one for Furiwake?

Makushita 10 tsukedashi was acknowledged for Endo at the riji-kai on the
20th. Condition for that is winning the All Nippon title and another
one of the 4 main amateur titles - only one title means ms 15. He is the
2nd after former Kiyoseumi in Hatsu 2007.

Why is his name not on the banzuke, then? Are the tsukedashi never listed on the official ranking?

That's correct. They're essentially treated the same as the maezumo rikishi, except they get to face makushita opposition instead of just each other.

Meh...I thought I'd come across the first press write-up of a new deshi today, but it was just another article on last basho's Umetsu. It's eeriely quiet this year, normally there's been some local coverage of rookies even before the shindeshi examination.

Are they still eligible to win the Ms yusho?

There's a new yobidashi for Nishikido-beya, Tsurutaro. 18 years old.

Is there a picture for him anywhere?

I searched for one before I posted, but found nothing. One other note - I think he's the brother of the heya's youngest rikishi, Honda. Edit: And Mitoyutaka, too. Edited by Yubinhaad

Miyagino-beya has a new recruit, 15-year-old Tanigawa Sho. He first met Hakuho in Asahikawa, Hokkaido during the summer jungyo of 2009. They met again last year when Hakuho was planting rice. Tanigawa began sumo as a fourth grader following the death of his grandfather, who was a big sumo fan and had urged him to give it a try.

Very small picture of him getting a send-off from his schoolmates:

Minezaki-beya also has a new recruit in the shape of 18-year-old Matsuda Takahiko. He is 180cm and 92kg, and did judo in high school.

15-year-old Katsumasa(?) Yakabe 矢ヶ部克将 from Moriguchi-shi in Osaka prefecture is joining Chiganoura-beya, and one might as well call him Masunoyama II - not only does he share the heya-gashira's body type (173 cm / 160 kg), he also aspires to do the same rushing oshi sumo, and admires the sekitori for being diligent in keiko but soft-hearted outside the dohyo. Yakabe has a pretty promising background, having been active in sumo since first grade and achieving wampaku national champion honours in years 4 and 5. His father and Chiganoura-oyakata share acquaintances, so the choice of heya was an easy one.

Endo had his first keiko in Oitekaze-beya on the 26th, dominating the makushita and lower ranked rikishi 13-1.

Slightly off topic, I know, but how come he got to wear a white training mawashi? Aren't those sekitori-only?

It's possible the picture was taken when Yakabe was just a guest at practice, not a member yet. It would be rather unusual for a current sekitori to pose with a brand-new recruit like that, too, unless it's one he personally recruited.

And the number is 39. First time in three years that there is an increase in new recruits for Haru.
