changes at the YDC

Recommended Posts

Everybody's favourite straight-talker, ex-Nikkei Shimbun president Takuhiko Tsuruta (85), is no longer chairman of the YDC as he ends his 10-year tenure on the committee (last 4 years as chairman). Also term-limited out are composer Toru Funamura (80) and kabuki actor Tanosuke Sawamura (80), so the committee's membership now stands at only 9 for the moment. Elected as Tsuruta's successor as chairman was Hitoshi Uchiyama (77), former president of the Yomiuri Shimbun group and current chair of "the other" NSK, the Nihon Shimbun Kyokai (Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association). He'll only head the YDC for two years as he's been on the committee since 2005 already.

In the YDC meeting Harumafuji was highly praised, the new chairman is hoping to see a Japanese yokozuna during his tenure, etc. etc.. Groundhog Day.

Remind me:

Was he the one who talked utter nonsense or just nonsense?

Did we love him or did we loath him?

Seriously, looking at the ages mentioned here, is EVERY member of the YDC at such an advanced age? It would definitely explain a lot...

My desk appreciates the change. I won't bash my head on it anymore, now that I won't be reading Tsuruta's comments once in a while.

First sitting lower house member to be on the YDC in 23 years, the last one having been the late Osamu Inaba, a former minister for justice as well as education back in the 1970s. Inaba was opposed to promoting Futahaguro during his YDC tenure, considering him "zero points" on the heart part of the shin-gi-tai requirement.

Two more new members for the upcoming post-Haru session, putting the YDC back at 12 members: Ryoki Sugita, 75-year-old former president of the Nikkei Shimbun group, and 64-year-old lawyer and Chuo University law school lecturer Yoshitaka Katsuno.
