Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted January 22, 2013 Several maegashira pursuers in the yusho race lost today while the high-rankers won, leaving undefeated Harumafuji and one win behind Hakuho as the main yusho contenders, with a dash of hope for Kisenosato as the ozeki is 8-2, but is still facing both yokozuna. Komusubi Shohozan is the first make-koshi in the sanyaku, opening up a new spot, and Myogiryu looks like the best candidate by far to fill it as he is 6-4 after the win over Tochiozan and has only one remaining opponent at M1 or higher with Baruto tomorrow. A kachi-koshi and the shukun-sho for a change is my prediction for him. Takanoiwa and Sotairyu looked pretty good in their kachi-koshi-clinching wins today while Jokoryu fell victim to a spectacular hatakikomi from Homarefuji and is now sharing the pursuer rank with his aite and three more rikishi. Shironoryu and Kotoyutaka fell to make-koshi and are unlikely to stay in juryo, as is Takamisakari, now at 3-7 with his sixth consecutive loss. The two shin-sekitori Azumaruy and Kagamio are still fighting for the kachi-koshi, both at 5-5 now. shumitto 418 Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) I would say Kisenosato has a chance because he is yet to face the two Yokozuna. If he beats them both and win all the other bouts, while Hakuho prevails over his rank-mate, then we could possibly have a three-way playoff. Or else the Ozeki would be the more reliant on the outcome of other bouts than he already is. With Myogiryu two wins shy from kachi-koshi, closing on repromotion to San'yaku and a kinboshi to his name to improve his chances of a sansho, Baruto will have to win fair and square tomorrow if he is to regain his rank. We'll see. In the meantime, 200th career win for Tochinowaka, 200th career lost for Gagamaru and Baruto both. I've just realized Kisenosato and Kotooshu are tied as the winningest Ozeki. 501 wins apiece. Edited January 22, 2013 by shumitto

shumitto 418 Posted January 22, 2013 I understood the "but is still facing the yokozuna" as something counting against his chances. Anyway, it looks we are on the same page.
Asashosakari 19,500 Posted January 22, 2013 I understood the "but is still facing the yokozuna" as something counting against his chances. Anyway, it looks we are on the same page. Double negative. ;-) What's counting against his chances is being two wins behind, so the "but" is introducing a positive factor.
rzombie1988 159 Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) Two questions: 1) The Yokozuna's only meet on the last day(providing there are only two), right? 2) If both Yokozuna's win all matches until the last day, would Hakuho have to win the Harumafuji match then have to fight him again the same day in a playoff for the championship?
