See that wavy pattern along the edge? That's the hamon. It's the part of the blade that's specially hardened to hold the edge. The rest of the blade will be made of softer and harder steel layered in one of several different ways to lend strength to the blade and allow it some flexibility without breaking.

While it has a practical function, the appearance of the hamon is one of the final artistic touches added to the blade during forging. Even without any other information, blades can often be identified from the hamon alone.

There actually exist databases for hamon, because it is the best way to identify swords. Impossible to fake.

The tachi for Kisenosato

Made by the 25th Fujiwara Kanefusa

It will be presented to him at the koenkai party in Osaka on the 2nd.

The NHK 11p.m. news had a quite good view of the tachi, but no video is on YouTube yet, only one that shows just this

K10010896541_1703022004_1703022018_01_02

and reads the NHK news page for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j6oVRmkTeY

Comment by the maker: "I want him to open up the future with this tachi" (in Japanese it's: cut open the future)

Kise commented like his acceptance phrase: "From now on I'll show appropriate results that won't disgrace this kesho-mawashi and this tachi." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1786546.html

So whose tachi has Kisenosato been using since his promotion?

At last an article mentioned it: his doyho-iri teacher Shibatayama-oyakata, Onokuni's tachi. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170303-OHT1T50034.html

I was hoping for more, but only a small one was in pics today

The blade has 1.8kg, the temper patter is intended to resemble the mountain range of Seki, engraved are the rising dragon and the kanji 心技体 shin-gi-tai.

The 2 makers show a detail on the new tachi for Kisenosato: the engraved dragon, with a juwel in its tail grip.

Quite a good view of the hamon as well. 心技体 shin-gi-tai is engraved on the other side.

The tachi and a nihonto (Japanese sword) for Terunofuji is on display in the government office of Tottori, presented to him by the alumni organization of the sumo club of Tottori Johoku high. He'll use the tachi for his yokozuna dohyo-iri from shonichi of the Aki basho on.

The 1m long nihonto is 備前国 Bizen-no-kuni 長船 osafune 祐定 sukesada https://www.touken-world.jp/search/18039/, and was made in 1576. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/local/tottori/news/20210903-OYTNT50133/

Is the tachi a shinsakuto, and if so, who made it? And are there any other photos? Would love to get a closer view of the tsuba and menukis, and of the hamon....

The tachi are usually newly made, but the news just show it and focus on the old nihonto. This are only local news from Tottori, maybe just before the basho, national news will give us more information. I also hope for a comment by NHK at the first dohyo-iri with the new tachi

Who made the tachi for Harumafuji, and will Terunofuji get a personal one?
