Day 14 results and day 15 pairings

Hokutoriki won without problems against Takekaze and stays one win ahead of Yokozuna Asashoryu who won against Ozeki Kaio after a good fight. Hokutoriki of course won against Kaio already in the first week and his win back then was much more decisive, actually he made all three Ozeki look like Hiramaku rikishi. Besides Wakanosato only Tamanoshima was able to give Hokutoriki a decent bout, even the Yokozuna got totally overpowered on day 6.

Tamanoshima and Hakuho won to have a fine 11-3 record but are eliminated from the yusho race. Kokkai lost and at 10-4 won't even have a sniff at the jun-yusho now. Wakanosato lost again and must be glad that he already has the kachi-koshi and Sekiwake position secured. Kyokutenho won and even another win on Senshuraku to reach 7-8 might not be enough to stay in Sanyaku since Kotomitsuki already is kachi-koshi and Tamanoshima seems to have enough wins for a Komusubi promotion already. So I guess the Sanyaku on the next banzuke is already settled with Hokutoriki, Wakanosato and Tochiazuma as Sekiwake and Kotomitsuki and Tamanoshima as Komusubi.

There will be several demotions from Makuuchi as Takanonami retired and Kasuganishiki and Ushiomaru are injured. Kobo and Asanowaka are sure demotions as well while Toki can only hope to stay with a win on Senshuraku. Futeno must be glad he started the basho with a 7-1 to secure a stay in Makuuchi as he now is 7-7.

Toyozakura crushed Tokitenku in Juryo to earn kachi-koshi and a Makuuchi promotion. Shin-juryo Toyonoshima won to pull even with Tokitenku at 11-3. Kasugao and another shin-Juryo Kotooshu stay one behind while Roho and the third shin-Juryo Hagiwara lost and are out of the yusho race.

There might be several generous promotions to Makuuchi to fill out the top division. Kasugao and Toyozakura are the only sure ones, while Otsukasa, Wakatoba, Roho and Tokitenku can be considered with another win. If all stars align right Kotooshu might get the nod after only one Juryo basho, but this is pretty unlikely.

There should be six promotions from Makushita to Juryo, or even seven if Wakakosho, who is the lowest ranked Juryo, loses tomorrow and gets demoted. Juzan, Kotonomine, Ichinotani and Katayama are four pretty safe promotions. Maikaze is up in Juryo against Daishodai and it might be that Daishodai could stay in Juryo with a win even if 6-9 normally isn't enough from his rank; but he would eliminate another prospect in Maikaze and there simply aren't enough left. The last Makushita bout tomorrow is Kotoshogiku against Yoshiazuma and it looks like set up as a promotion decider between them.

Kaiho for a second basho in a row has a chance to equal his all-time best record in Makuuchi.......

last time he didn't do it and this time things look even more difficult.I hope he will win tomorrow and make a great KK overall.....

Hokutoriki will get his yusho tomorrow if nothing out of the ordinary happens.Hakuho is not so strong to withstand Riki's attacks.

rest of the matches have litle interest (except Tokitsuumi vs Aminishiki for the KK) to me.....

unless Riki loses to Hakuho ......... then Asa-Chiyo would be breathtaking...... (Dribbling...)

What time do the Juryo bouts start tomorrow?

8:00CET (15.00 japanese time ) like always? Or the schedule will change because of possible play-offs?

Half an hour earlier, more or less.

Hakuho is not so strong to withstand my attacks. But he is also a coward. Most dishonorable henka in history.

What about the one in Hatsu 2002?

Not as ugly as today's.

By my definition, no henka. I suggest anyone who thinks it was a henka look at the match on Dale's site. They hit frontally hands against hands, and then Haku moved away. No henka. My definition of a henka is when there is no contact at all, or sideways contact and the loser goes sailing out. No way that happened today.

no this is called "i was outwitted by a rookie".....

if Riki had studied his opponent a bit he should expect a side move by Hakuho. It was his fault entirely.......

and Hakuho DID stand in front of Riki but then decided to move sideways and let him fall for himself.Nothing wrong with that ......

This is intersting as your comment reminded me of the same impression.

If my memory is correct, I fee like there used to be way more risky "defenseless henkas" or 'real henkas'. But when I looked at videos of this year's bashos, their skill is getting way better so that often they have a good defense and not oshdshied or yorikiried when caught doing so.

Two different ways to look at the same thing, but none contradicts the other.

True. If I grab a gun and point it to you and say "I'm going to kill you", and then I do, it's your fault entirely if you die...

(P.S. You were used just as an example - I hold nothing against you.)

Everything is wrong with that. It all depends on how you look at it.

not the best example there.

Hakuho just knew what to expect from Riki and decided that his move would give him an edge in winning.Hokutoriki just went forward even though he knew that Hakuho would do something like that.

But he would knew that if he watched any of his opponents previous bouts in this basho when he was moving backwards against strong opponents....

'twasn't the point... I don't feel like arguing about that right now.
