Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted May 22, 2004 Hokutoriki won without problems against Takekaze and stays one win ahead of Yokozuna Asashoryu who won against Ozeki Kaio after a good fight. Hokutoriki of course won against Kaio already in the first week and his win back then was much more decisive, actually he made all three Ozeki look like Hiramaku rikishi. Besides Wakanosato only Tamanoshima was able to give Hokutoriki a decent bout, even the Yokozuna got totally overpowered on day 6. Tamanoshima and Hakuho won to have a fine 11-3 record but are eliminated from the yusho race. Kokkai lost and at 10-4 won't even have a sniff at the jun-yusho now. Wakanosato lost again and must be glad that he already has the kachi-koshi and Sekiwake position secured. Kyokutenho won and even another win on Senshuraku to reach 7-8 might not be enough to stay in Sanyaku since Kotomitsuki already is kachi-koshi and Tamanoshima seems to have enough wins for a Komusubi promotion already. So I guess the Sanyaku on the next banzuke is already settled with Hokutoriki, Wakanosato and Tochiazuma as Sekiwake and Kotomitsuki and Tamanoshima as Komusubi. There will be several demotions from Makuuchi as Takanonami retired and Kasuganishiki and Ushiomaru are injured. Kobo and Asanowaka are sure demotions as well while Toki can only hope to stay with a win on Senshuraku. Futeno must be glad he started the basho with a 7-1 to secure a stay in Makuuchi as he now is 7-7. Toyozakura crushed Tokitenku in Juryo to earn kachi-koshi and a Makuuchi promotion. Shin-juryo Toyonoshima won to pull even with Tokitenku at 11-3. Kasugao and another shin-Juryo Kotooshu stay one behind while Roho and the third shin-Juryo Hagiwara lost and are out of the yusho race. There might be several generous promotions to Makuuchi to fill out the top division. Kasugao and Toyozakura are the only sure ones, while Otsukasa, Wakatoba, Roho and Tokitenku can be considered with another win. If all stars align right Kotooshu might get the nod after only one Juryo basho, but this is pretty unlikely. There should be six promotions from Makushita to Juryo, or even seven if Wakakosho, who is the lowest ranked Juryo, loses tomorrow and gets demoted. Juzan, Kotonomine, Ichinotani and Katayama are four pretty safe promotions. Maikaze is up in Juryo against Daishodai and it might be that Daishodai could stay in Juryo with a win even if 6-9 normally isn't enough from his rank; but he would eliminate another prospect in Maikaze and there simply aren't enough left. The last Makushita bout tomorrow is Kotoshogiku against Yoshiazuma and it looks like set up as a promotion decider between them. -- Doitsuyama Day 14 Juryo J14w Wakakosho (7-7) hatakikomi J9e Bushuyama (6-8) J13w Toyonoshima (11-3) yorikiri J7w Gojoro (6-8) J10e Kotooshu (10-4) uwatedashinage J6e Takanotsuru (8-6) J8w Wakanoyama (9-5) oshidashi J6w Roho (9-5) J5e Chiyotenzan (6-8) oshidashi J12e Dewanofuji (3-11) J5w Kitazakura (5-9) hikiotoshi J9w Sumanofuji (5-9) J13e Daishodai (5-9) yorikiri J4e Kaido (3-11) J3e Yotsukasa (6-8) oshidashi J14e Tochifudo (3-11) J3w Wakatoba (8-6) tsukiotoshi J12w Hagiwara (9-5) J2e Kasugao (10-4) tsukiotoshi J7e Ama (6-8) J11e Hamanishiki (9-5) kubinage J2w Otsukasa (8-6) J1w Toyozakura (8-6) yoritaoshi J10w Tokitenku (11-3) Makuuchi M17e Kobo (4-10) yorikiri J4w Oikari (3-11) J1e Tamakasuga (6-8) hatakikomi M14w Asanowaka (3-11) M11e Aminishiki (7-7) uwatenage M15w Futeno (7-7) M12w Jumonji (8-6) yorikiri M10e Harunoyama (4-10) M16w Takanowaka (8-6) yoritaoshi M10w Toki (3-11) M9e Kotoryu (9-5) oshidashi M13w Kinkaiyama (8-6) M12e Kaiho (9-5) makiotoshi M7e Kokkai (10-4) M16e Hakuho (11-3) oshidashi M7w Kyokushuzan (8-6) M11w Hayateumi (8-6) yorikiri M6w Iwakiyama (9-5) M3w Dejima (7-7) yorikiri M5e Kotonowaka (7-7) M3e Shimotori (6-8) yoritaoshi M2e Asasekiryu (2-12) M2w Kakizoe (6-8) yorikiri M9w Tosanoumi (6-8) M4w Takamisakari (6-8) yorikiri M1e Tochinonada (4-10) M1w Hokutoriki (13-1) tsukidashi M8e Takekaze (8-6) K1e Miyabiyama (3-11) hatakikomi M8w Tochisakae (6-8) K1w Kotomitsuki (8-6) tsukidashi M4e Tokitsuumi (7-7) M5w Tamanoshima (11-3) yorikiri S1e Wakanosato (8-6) S1w Kyokutenho (6-8) yorikiri M6e Buyuzan (4-10) O1e Chiyotaikai (9-5) oshidashi O2e Musoyama (6-8) Y1e Asashoryu (12-2) sukuinage O1w Kaio (9-5) Day 15 Makushita Ms22e Ryuo (4-2) Ms17w Raiko (4-2) Ms20e Komanofuji (4-2) Ms16w Tamaasuka (4-2) Ms15w Kitataiki (2-4) Ms10w Yotsuguruma (2-4) Ms8e Chiyohakuho (2-4) Ms10e Kotokuni (2-4) Ms7e Yoshiazuma (4-2) Ms5w Kotoshogiku (4-2) Juryo Ms7w Kotokanyu (3-3) J14w Wakakosho (7-7) J14e Tochifudo (3-11) Ms6e Masutsuyoshi (1-4) J13e Daishodai (5-9) Ms1w Maikaze (3-3) J12e Dewanofuji (3-11) Ms4e Ishide (2-4) J10e Kotooshu (10-4) J8w Wakanoyama (9-5) J7e Ama (6-8) J10w Tokitenku (11-3) J6e Takanotsuru (8-6) J6w Roho (9-5) J5e Chiyotenzan (6-8) J9w Sumanofuji (5-9) J4e Kaido (3-11) J4w Oikari (3-11) J11e Hamanishiki (9-5) J3w Wakatoba (8-6) J13w Toyonoshima (11-3) J2w Otsukasa (8-6) J2e Kasugao (10-4) J7w Gojoro (6-8) J12w Hagiwara (9-5) J1w Toyozakura (8-6) J1e Tamakasuga (6-8) J9e Bushuyama (6-8) Makuuchi M17e Kobo (4-10) J5w Kitazakura (5-9) J3e Yotsukasa (6-8) M14w Asanowaka (3-11) M9e Kotoryu (9-5) M16w Takanowaka (8-6) M8e Takekaze (8-6) M13w Kinkaiyama (8-6) M11w Hayateumi (8-6) M7w Kyokushuzan (8-6) M12w Jumonji (8-6) M6w Iwakiyama (9-5) M12e Kaiho (9-5) M5w Tamanoshima (11-3) M5e Kotonowaka (7-7) M15w Futeno (7-7) M10w Toki (3-11) M4w Takamisakari (6-8) M4e Tokitsuumi (7-7) M11e Aminishiki (7-7) M3e Shimotori (6-8) M3w Dejima (7-7) M8w Tochisakae (6-8) M2w Kakizoe (6-8) M2e Asasekiryu (2-12) M6e Buyuzan (4-10) M16e Hakuho (11-3) M1w Hokutoriki (13-1) M1e Tochinonada (4-10) M10e Harunoyama (4-10) M7e Kokkai (10-4) K1w Kotomitsuki (8-6) K1e Miyabiyama (3-11) M9w Tosanoumi (6-8) S1e Wakanosato (8-6) S1w Kyokutenho (6-8) O2e Musoyama (6-8) O1w Kaio (9-5) Y1e Asashoryu (12-2) O1e Chiyotaikai (9-5)
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 22, 2004 Kaiho for a second basho in a row has a chance to equal his all-time best record in Makuuchi....... last time he didn't do it and this time things look even more difficult.I hope he will win tomorrow and make a great KK overall..... Hokutoriki will get his yusho tomorrow if nothing out of the ordinary happens.Hakuho is not so strong to withstand Riki's attacks. rest of the matches have litle interest (except Tokitsuumi vs Aminishiki for the KK) to me..... unless Riki loses to Hakuho ......... then Asa-Chiyo would be breathtaking...... Kintamayama 45,445 Posted May 23, 2004 (edited) By my definition, no henka. I suggest anyone who thinks it was a henka look at the match on Dale's site. They hit frontally hands against hands, and then Haku moved away. No henka. My definition of a henka is when there is no contact at all, or sideways contact and the loser goes sailing out. No way that happened today. Edited May 23, 2004 by Kintamayama

No way that happened today. This is intersting as your comment reminded me of the same impression. If my memory is correct, I fee like there used to be way more risky "defenseless henkas" or 'real henkas'. But when I looked at videos of this year's bashos, their skill is getting way better so that often they have a good defense and not oshdshied or yorikiried when caught doing so. QttP 0 Posted May 24, 2004 no this is called "i was outwitted by a rookie"..... Two different ways to look at the same thing, but none contradicts the other. if Riki had studied his opponent a bit he should expect a side move by Hakuho. It was his fault entirely....... True. If I grab a gun and point it to you and say "I'm going to kill you", and then I do, it's your fault entirely if you die... (P.S. You were used just as an example - I hold nothing against you.) and Hakuho DID stand in front of Riki but then decided to move sideways and let him fall for himself.Nothing wrong with that ...... Everything is wrong with that. It all depends on how you look at it.

Hakuho just knew what to expect from Riki and decided that his move would give him an edge in winning.Hokutoriki just went forward even though he knew that Hakuho would do something like that. But he would knew that if he watched any of his opponents previous bouts in this basho when he was moving backwards against strong opponents....
