Kyushu Basho 2012 Discussion Thread

Hakuho's sumo looks very strong. However, lose one match and people ? his ability, loss of speed., etc. A great Yokozuna handles that turmoil without blinking an eye. How many other Yokozuna's were told its time to go? Hakuho's right up there with the great ones. I admire his poise, determination and professionalism.

It's great to see Ikioi finally start to look comfortable at this level. Also, is this where Goeido finally starts to live up to the hype?

Tatsu looks strong. He completely dominated his three bouts so far. Okay, he got the lesser opposition than recently. But I haven't seen him dominating in this fashion at all. The last time he started with 3-0 was in lower Sandanme. Is he ready now for the next level?

Also Tochinowaka looks strong again. Solid bouts where he uses his length, weight, and strength. Did he overcome what hampered him this year (whatever it was)? He was never 6-0 as Sekitori.

Azumaryu is on the brink to his Sektori debut, at 3-0. His bouts have been wild and shaky (as I often see on top of Makushita, and I don't blame them) but he showed great fighting spirit. Last bout he just survived a solid Henka and managed to turn it around.

It seems to be the season for the tall boys, considering also Kotooshu looks good.

Also Chiyootori looks strong. His sole defeat (on day 3) was a very unlucky one. The final shove which send Kotoyuki out got stuck in the top knot and was called Hansoku consequently.

I just realized what a load of baloney this is that Goeido should be an Ozeki by now, he made 33 victories in 3 tournaments in a row but it didn't count because of that cancelled March tournament last year was smack in the middle.

I'm now officially a Goeido fan... I just need a cool name.

Aha

Gogo Boy!

It was even 34 wins. But if you really believe that the cancelled March tournament was the reason for a denied ozeki promotion, I can't help you, sorry. Even in the last of the three tournament he was maegashira, and the requirement is more or less having all three tournaments leading to an ozeki promotion in sanyaku or at least joi-jin. So Goeido really was not in consideration at all for an ozeki promotion even if he had a 15-0 in the third basho instead of the respectable 11-4 at M1.

Ah I see, so the criteria are a bit different than I had thought. What a load of candy bars

No load of anything. He would be sekiwake nonetheless now since he had consecutive make-koshi already since that. Lets face it, a double digit score outside the joi-jin means nothing for ozeki promotion and rightly so.

Wasn't Goeido one of the reasons for the cancelled basho?

I still find it strange that rikishi who broke the law (gambling on baseball) weren't dismissed, while rikishi merely accused of yaocho were kicked out.

Toyonoshima looks totally switched on this basho. Complete contrast to the last couple

Toyo looks injured.

Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Kotomitsuki.Dismissed for gambling. Yaocho- names were mentioned specifically in writing in SMS messages. Not as suspects, but as people who were approached and agreed and DID it, not merely accused. Maybe merrily accused.. The fact that a very small portion of them still insists they are innocent doesn't change the fact that the enormous majority quietly left. And they were more than three..

I don't wanna open that box, but based on what I remember and read, those accusations weren't proved. And the majority quiting doesn't attest to guilt per se, it is rather their own way to handle the problem.

I'll refresh your memory. Their names were found in cell phone correspondences and in ledgers confiscated from the go-between alongside exact sums of money they received. Of course, it can all be a part of a grand conspiracy to get rid of all those who had black mawashis or used a particular brand of shampoo.. Seriously, there was no reason to not believe it, since why would anyone single out these particular rikishi for no reason? It's not like all of them were foreigners or liked green tea. But let's not open that box, as you say. We'll each believe what we choose anyway. I was merely disagreeing with Ronnie's assessment.

Kakuryu just pulled a hell of a henka. What did Kotoshogiku ever do to him?

I got distracted and only saw it out of the corner of my eye -- was it as bad as it looked?

It was an exceptionally well executed maneuver.

Worse. I. the chief advocate of henka in the universe, think this was the greatest piece of garbage ever, as did the crowd, apparently. Especially coming from Kakuryuu, who is a great rikishi with great abilities. BOOOOO!

(Sorry, Fay.. tell him I am angry..)

Friggin Kakuryu I expected better from this technician, what a piece of chocolate maneuver

The Gogoboy won another one! And Kisenosato beat Myogiryu ( who still looks weak) in a spirited match. I'm happy that Lungie won too but damn Kaisei has been a disappointment.

Guess maybe I could dare root for Goeido to take the yusho? Could it be ? :Go go Goeido!

He still has to go through the Kotos and the Yokozunas. If he gets by decently (3-1), maybe he has a chance.

Me thinks he has no chance for the yusho

but an excellent opportunity to start an Ozeki-run.

I'm not able to watch video this basho. Is there something wrong with Myogiryu, or is he just overmatched?

Shotenro was knocked out by Aoiyama today with almost muay tai elbow strike, but it wasn't done by Hakuho so I hope nobody will shout "Evil! Must retire!"

That nobody seemed to be in Kyushu ;), decent and silent, as reccomended!

He's fighting most of the same crowd as last basho (10-5), although he still has to fight the Kotozeki who were kyujo early last time. I don't know if there's any particular injury, haven't heard anything. Maybe Myogiryu is the kind of rikishi who needs to be at 100% to do well at the top (as he has done recently). If there's that drop in form and/or fitness, even just down to 95%, it really knocks the wind out of him. Just a theory though.

I'm sure I read somewhere that today was the first full house. A henka on the local hero is probably not the best way to get the crowd cheering for you.

Yup, full house today.

And Kakuryu demostrated how to completely silence the numerous Kotoshogiku fans within a second... zero applause for him.

The non-standard torikumi continues with Harumafuji-Kotooshu tomorrow. This judging crew continues to find my approval. (Early non-mandatory exchange bouts today, too.)
