All five leaders achieved the earliest possible kachi-koshi which puts this basho in sole second place all-time behind Haru 1989 which saw six makuuchi rikishi with an 8-0 start, all six yokozuna and ozeki who were not absent. Except for Kakuryu's sole loss to Homasho this basho too all present yokozuna and ozeki have a perfect score, in addition to Takayasu and Kyokutenho (oldest and second youngest makuuchi rikishi). Okinoumi also is doing really well, moving to 7-1 as well. The five win level was pretty thin yesterday with only two rikishi but today it's a really unusual single makuuchi rikishi at 5-3 as 2-6 is the most popular score today.

The juryo leader Tanzo fell at the Oiwato obstacle, allowing Tamawashi, Chiyonokuni and Jokoryu to join the lead at 6-2, the latter three along with Ikioi already looking like the makuuchi promotees for next basho. On the demotion end of the division it looks like Oniarashi, Kimikaze and Arawashi will join Keitenkai and Kokkai on the move down unless they turn the basho around really fast.
