Doitsuyama 1,178 Posted September 15, 2012 All five makuuchi leaders won in convincing fashion, giving us five 7-0 rikishi for the first time since Natsu 2007 - a pretty rare occasion as it happened only four more times ever, in Aki 1951, Natsu 1953, Natsu 1990 and in Haru 1989, the last one setting the record with even six 7-0 starters. There are also four rikishi at 6-1 and nine makuuchi rikishi at six wins or better after day 7 also is second place since 1967 with Natsu 2007 best alltime with the hard to beat 11 rikishi (actually setting the alltime record, beating even the oversized makuuchi divisions before 1967). Even with three ozeki going kyujo we can expect an exciting yusho race, maybe even more so because of less spoilers. The yusho race is more like an obstacle course as only shin-sekitori Tanzo moved to 6-1 with just half of the pursuers joining the other three previous leaders at 5-2. Tochinowaka actually got his first win, but Ikioi, Tamawashi and Chiyonokuni are the early candidates for a successful makuuchi return with Jokoryu still the leading candidate for a makuuchi debut next basho despite his loss against Kotoyuki today. Asashosakari 19,193 Posted September 15, 2012 Even with three ozeki going kyujo we can expect an exciting yusho race, maybe even more so because of less spoilers. For those perpetually pining for the glory days of the mid-1990s - you can thank the same-heya rule for creating the same effect pretty much every basho back then. (Well, for some lucky rikishi anyway.)
Tsubame 361 Posted September 15, 2012 with Jokoryu still the leading candidate for a makuuchi debut next basho I watch this guy the last bashos and I am looking forward to his debut in the Makuuchi division. Quite impressive career up to now...
