Am I correct in understanding that Harumafuji doesn't necessarily have to win the tournament in order to be considered for promotion? If he and Hakuho face off on day 15 each being 14-0, can Harumafuji lose and still get the promotion to Yokozuna?

If the info Mike provides over ST is right (and why shouldn't it be), Kokonoe-o. demanded the absence of bonus shoves, henkas, as well as the presence of a distinctive style in HF's sumo for him to be considered at all. No numbers were named. Even though I think that a yusho would bag it for him, I personally expect that everything less wouldn't be enough, based on that info. I'm surprised that they didn't ask him to have a certain color of panties.

Hey, does anyone know the Spongebob episode, where Neptune tries everything to prevent him from being his Frycook of Gods, even though he met every absurd precondition?

No?

Just asking.

This reminds me of a bit by standup comedian Chris Rock regarding Barack Obama's first run towards being elected President of the USA:

Barack is so calm and cool that sometimes I think he doesn't realize he's the black president. Like he thinks he can win this thing fair and square!

Like he thinks having the most votes is gonna mean something! Shit... they will change this whole system on his black ass overnight, you better ask the indians about white men and rules. They will change all their shit, with a straight face too. "Hey man, you got the most votes, too bad you lost.... That's how we used to do it. We don't really count those votes anymore."

If it was Kisenosato they'd be ordering a rope right now made out of silk dipped in gold, colored with rainbows and the embroidered with the Japanese anthem on it.

And have Kisenosato potentially end up as the Epic Fail Yokozuna? Get real. He's the last guy who'd be getting promoted with iffy results. It's a whole different ballgame compared to ozeki promotions.

I was wondering whether these three requirements are just a clearer explanation of what hinkaku (or the absence of it) entails. If that is true, Kokonoe did not mention anything highly unusual.

I am willing to stake my tatters that 13 wins regardless of anything will seal it for him, provided none of those wins come from henkas.

I'll bet you 5-to-1 that doesn't happen. Is gambling illegal in Israel? Let's Bodog

Gambling is mandatory in Israel. Every man, after he reaches the age of 18, must gamble.

Hmmm... I think he would have to be in contention on the final day. A 13-2 with Hakuho taking the yusho 15-0 would not be enough for him IMHO.

A 13-1 on day 15 puts him in contention. He will probably face Hakuho. Think I agree that, in this scenario, a 13-2 will get it for him.

That can't be kosher!

How about 10 dollars of yours to 50 of mine says if Harumafuji gets 13 or less victories he ain't makin' Yokozuna! PayPal's the word!

PS Your videos rule.

One of the things I love most about sumo is how hard it is to become a Yokozuna. It is the one sport in the world where you can genuinely say that if a person gets there, they deserve it. The almost impossible criteria for becoming a Yokozuna means that generally, only those who genuinely deserve it get it. The system rewards excellence, not mediocrity. That is one of the things that makes sumo so special.

Based on that, there is no way Kise is getting to Yok status unless he absolutely meets the criteria (ie he deserves it). Likewise HF, he'll have to earn it with a dominant performance this basho. If he doesn't get it I won't be too sad because it will just make it more special when someone finally manages to break through that almost impossible barrier.

And if there was a conspiracy to get a Japanese Yokozuna, Kaio would have been made one years ago. The sheer fact that he spent so long at Ozeki suggests that Japanese or not, the stringent Yokozuna guidelines are firmly in place. There is a distinct difference between promotion to Ozeki and promotion to Yokozuna.

I am by no means saying Harumafuji should be given a promotion to Yokozuna without meeting the requirements, but he definitely deserves it with a strong performance this basho (1 or possibly 2 losses). It seems like he is working hard right now, so hopefully he will be able to put it all together and finally get Yoko glory.

Harumafuji doesn't seem as explosively quick as he did last basho. Maybe he's being careful so as not to get caught in a henka, but he seems to be more deliberate/slow this basho. Still showing TONS of power, however.

Oh, and if HF's promotion comes down to a day 15 win against Hakuho, I will bet any sum of money that SumoTalk will fabricate yaocho in some form or another.

Also, I adore Kotoshogiku's ratchet-sumo.

I agree. I thought his speed looked to be lacking in the first two bouts, but I, too, quickly came to the assumption that it must be because he is "playing it safe" and trying to avoid getting caught off balance. His power is looking fantastic, though, and that will help him a lot against some of the bigger opponents.

And maybe he's attempting to do "Yokozuna sumo"-powerful yet deliberate and reck (which should be the opposite of reckless, but isn't, but now is..).

But the dirty secret is that Kyokutenho and Wakanosato are slated to meet on day 15 with zensho records and screw the whole thing up.

You heard it here first.

Takanoyama is getting thrown around like a cork in a tidal wave, it's frustrating to watch.

Look at Kyokutenho so far showing dominant sumo!

and 3 ozeki lost today, what a trip! Goeido that sneaky rat showing Kotooshu what he's made of, I love it.

And Aoiyama lost again. He's just not ready for this. I was very surprised to see Kotoshogiku lose but Homasho's strategy was impeccable.

And Harumafuji bitchslapping the sense out of Shohozan! He's like a pitbull

Good stuff.

Still a bit early to call, but Kisenosato looks in good shape, maybe in good enough shape to spoil Harumafuji's chances for a party before he even reaches Hakuho...

Of course, this is Kisenosato we are talking about, always capable of shining one day and falling on his face the next one :-)

Bart's knee must be killing him. Chances of him dropping out of the tourney? On his rematch it looked like he couldn't generate any power.

With 2 loses on record in day 3, and that malfunctioning knee, his chances of a KK start to look slim. I guess he probably should go kyujo to avoid aggravating his injury.

Unless of course his fellow Ozeki are planning a rescue mission for week 2...

Why is Baruto getting robbed this basho?

Perhaps because he won't make it to the end anyway ?

Why is Shohozan so brown?

Show How Sun :-D
