Shin-Juryo Kotokuzan visited Yokohama city hall recently to report his promotion to Mayor Fumiko Hayashi, as the first sekitori from the city since Zenshinyama, who made his last Juryo appearance in 1999. The design of his first kesho-mawashi was also revealed. On a blue background representing the Philippine Sea is a floral tribute featuring Yokohama's official flower, a rose, and jasminum sambac, the national flower of the Philippines. The Yokohama Citizens Volunteer Association will present it to him on July 4th.

That complete first kesho mawashi for Kotokuzan hadn't been posted yet hereFSJaGRQVUAA82jO.jpg:large

I haven't found an article of the actual presentation - here a pic from a member of the Yokohama city council

Chiyosakae got a kesho mawashi showing Fukuchiyama castle, the symbol of his hometown in Kyoto, from his local koenkai for the first juryo from Fukuchiyama city, from Kyoto after 25 years again. The base color is that of his high school Kyoto Kyoei Gakuen High in Fukuchiyama, which is the donator. He plans to use it for the first 5 days of the basho. o

It's always a pleasure to read the story about each new kesho-mawashi -- the symbolism, why certain colors were chosen, why certain fruits or vegetables were added.  A big thank-you to all who have researched these and provided this information.

Speaking of which, does anyone know the meaning of the large green spinach-looking leaves on Chiyosakae's new kesho-mawashi?

Looks like treetops to me.

Might be on a different thread.

Why is the inside of many kesho mawashi red with two circling golden dragons? Is there any symbolism or just to look cool?

The dragon is auspicious, most kesho mawashi have a chrysanthemum design in that hidden part. I have a video somewhere about the making of a kesho mawashi in which the hidden part is explained in short, maybe I can still find that.

A selection of different designs from the kesho mawashi at the Oh!sumo exhibitions is in this post.

Think that was part of the customary shin-jūryō interview. I hope a transcript gets published because there were a lot of interesting titbits I didn't catch - mainly the bit where he knows Hōshōryū and was presumably interviewed about choosing a different path and becoming established a lot later.

Ah yes, its all an interview about their lives, and talking about the KM is just a part of the interview.

Yeah, I am incredibly curious to try and see what he said about that.

They were on the same plane from Mongolia to Japan in 2015, for one thing.

Not exactly new by now, but I was digging on the internet and I found images of some kesho mawashi Oshoma was presented that weren't shared here and I think its nice to have these documented.

Firstly, Oshoma received a kesho mawashi from Don Quijote Co. (AKA Don Don Donki) featuring the mascot.

He also received one from Daiei Co., a housing and construction company based on Kobe, Hyogo prefecture. Which displays a horse, homage to his shikona that ends in the kanji for horse ().

Oshoma will get another one for juryo promotion, from the Naruto-beya Kyushu koenkai, to be ready for the Kyushu basho. It shows a red lion/akajishi, the no. 1 festival float at the Karatsu kunshi. Karatsu city and Genkai town is written next to it, the Kyushu lodgings of the heya are in Karatsu, the heya has a cooperation with the city since 2019. The heya has also intense interactions with schools in Genkai.

The total costs to make it are 2.2 million Yen, 800000 of that come from Karatsu, 200000 from Genkai, to aid the koenkai.

Wakatakakage from the local koenkai of the Onami brothers got a new one that shows Hokusai's great wave: his real name Onami has that meaning.

A good representation of his heya as well, Arashio means rough tide

Tobizaru got a new kesho mawashi yesterday at the party to celebrate the inauguration of his new personal koenkai Meienkai. It shows Son Gokuu (Sun Wukong), the monkey king (usually called just "monkey") from the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West (one of my favorite stories, I use Son Gokuu as a symbol achimp.de/goku.gif - seems the article scrapped the link to the full English translation). Gokuu fights the guardian beasts of the 4 directions, in the their colors symbolized in the 4 tassels of the dohyo, tiger, turtle, (usually called) phoenix and dragon.

The koenkai was formed in April, to support his quest for sanyaku - that has now certainly succeeded. Next goal: go for ozeki https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/09/26/kiji/20220926s00005000598000c.html

Not that new but not yet mentioned here - 2 kesho mawashi of Ichiyamamoto.

After the basho he was at his old Ono agricultural high school in Hokuto. The school's alumni association had given him a kesho mawashi in July, in the school colors, which was on display. http://www.hokkaido-np.co.jp/article/736957/

From his hometown Iwanai he has one with the town's mascot Taramaru, a walleye pollack that gets fished there

Hello, do anyone know where to look for high-res pictures of Hiradoumi's kensho-mawashis? I've seen many times the one with Hirado bridge and castle during the basho, but i can't find many pics.
