New kesho mawashi

It’s fortunate that they went with the Hokuto-no-ken theme.  Just imagine, a Yokozuna’s kesho-mawashi set featuring Hello Kitty!  Do Yokozunas have a say in the designs? (A similar question has been asked before, but I did not see an answer.)  More importantly, do the designs have to be approved by the JSA before they are made?  If not, I’m assuming the JSA would have the power to ban the use of an inappropriate kesho-mawashi or one unbecoming of a Yokozuna.

Good question! I'm also interested about the answer.

Tobizaru got the traditional kesho-mawashi from Saitama Sakae high.

with the headmaster and sumo club head coach Yamada

In return there is the customary rule of donating 500kg of rice to the sumo club. At the moment there are 8 sekitori of Saitama Sakae origin, Goeido at the top. During the 3 years in school, a sumo club member eats about 750kg of rice, and in one month all members at the moment devour about 450kg - so the 500kg aren't that much.

The bento for the 21 members of the sumo club, prepared by Yamada.

Rikishin got a new kesho-mawashi from his local "Cheer for Rikishin Club". It was formed in March for the first sekitori from Taragi-town and has 376 members, about 100 were there for the presentation. It shows the coat of arms of the town (designed from the kanji タ) , with his shikona on the left and the name of the town 多良木 on the right.

Presented by a representative of the Clay Decoration society, a friend of his wife

And this year again - after each new one from the Clay Decoration Society, so far Yoshikaze got a sansho. A much lighter than the other 2 and without the shikona. The 3 together are meant to represent shin-gi-tai, and the last one is for gi/waza - technique, title: 3 arrows crane (looks more like a duck to me though). The society representative explains the 3 arrows at the center of the crane as the symbol for a sharp attack: "The tachiai is 50% of the win in sumo. The tachiai is the first arrow, then to shoot a 2nd arrow and a third, this is the image for the design." http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170702-OHT1T50126.html

Tobizaru got a new kesho mawashi - and a monkey - from the Yasuragi-en (garden of serenity) care center for the elderly in Asahi-city, Chiba, as one of 5 rikishi of Oitekaze-beya that have close relations with the facility http://www.yasuragien.or.jp/news/

The design is a duck - the 5 rikishi love to eat that at the local top-restaurant(s) when they come to the center - carrying bananas (not negi - kamonegi ) - the favorite monkey food. http://www.chibanippo.co.jp/news/local/421594

I think I missed the tiger kesho mawashi for Asanoyama while I was in Japan  - the local paper has the article behind the pay wall, which means one has to piece it together from the search result display of short texts http://search.webun.jp/index.html?q=闘虎

4bf2a4c6-8366-4cd1-888a-83a4290acb49.jpg

It was the 3rd kesho mawashi he received, from the family of his late mentor Urayama Hideki, whose name is on it as the donor

Asanoyama Hideki emphasized the first name of his new full shikona 朝乃山英樹 to honor his former high school sumo coach Urayama Hideki who died on the 21st at the young age of 40 - he took 3 kanji from the name of his mentor.

闘虎 - fighting tiger is written on it, and below the shikona 朝乃山

The city hosts each year in October a national fireworks contest, one of the top 3 of such festivals in Japan. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1863331.html

Yutakayama from Niigata TV (NST) on the event of his local Niigata jungyo basho got a new fishy kesho mawashi: with nishiki-goi, the Japanese coloured carps, highly valued especially in Niigata. From the story of carps climbing up waterfalls, the sponsor did chose the koi as the symbol of a successful career. http://www.niigata-nippo.co.jp/news/sports/20170804338994.html

Hakuho's newest set, debuted at the ceremonial dohyo iri today

The set is from Hakuho's new Niigata koenkai, the Shohou-kai 翔鳳会 , formed in February - 翔 is Hakuho's shikona's first name, 鳳 is another kanji for the phoenix in Hakuho. Ready for the dohyo-iri in Shibata, Niigata.

The one for Hakuho shows the kanji 翔 in the form of a phoenix - exactly a 翔鳳

DGPFnZQVYAAuNHw.jpg:large

The one for the tachi-mochi shows the Bishamonten, of which Uesugi Kenshin was seen to be an incarnation, and the Niigata prefectural bird, Nipponia Nippon, which is especially cared for in Niigata, on Sado island.

DGPFnZRUQAAJgX7.jpg:large

And Niigata is of course famous for top rice, main area to cultivate koshihikari - and the most famous son of the region is Uesugi Kenshin. The one for the tsuyu-harai shows his image and a design of rice plants - but it is not known who created the English phrases.

Takayasu got a new kesho mawashi from the Tagonoura-koenkai at his ozeki promotion party yesterday. It the shows the Philippine mythical dragon bakunawa. This dragon is said to eat moons - it ate all the other moons there were in myth, so now there only is one. The design equals the banzuke ranks with the moons, the dragon is shown having eaten the lesser 9 moons jk, jd, sd, ms, j, m, k, s and ozeki - and the last remaining in the sky is yokozuna (kutchau - devour - is often used in the meaning of to absolutely overcome someone or master something). The wish to get the 10th, the yokozuna moon as well is what the donors wanted to express with this kesho mawashi (but the bakunawa is always trying and didn't manage to eat the last moon, so this might not be a very fitting symbol for the hope to get the rope). Asked about getting a wife (yome-tori): "Tsuna-tori - getting the rope (comes first), I guess." http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170902-OHT1T50268.html

The next standard kesho-mawashi for Yago: from his high school, the well known Saitama Sakae one.

At the presentation: the headmaster, student representatives and sumo coach Yamada, who scouted Yago for the school in his 1st year middle school at a tournament. And when he entered high school, he first couldn't do proper keiko because both knees were injured.

Asanoyama today got a kesho-mawashi from Kinki daigaku (now Kindai university in English): "At last I got it."

201710300000627-nsogp_0.jpg

He graduated there in 2016. At present there are Takarafuji, Homarefuji and Tokushoryu from Kindai. Usually the rikishi get it for juryo promotion, but he rose too fast and it wasn't ready.

"I'll give it a try at the basho and if the effect is bad, I change it" (jokingly) - He plans to use it from day 1 to day 8. The kindai top: "Gambarize and aim for yokozuna in the end!"

201710300000627-w200_1.jpgo

"It's very beautiful."
