Very cool. It looks like a 70s prog rock album cover.

Black, red, gold...looks somewhat familiar, can't put my finger on it...

I'd like to see a completely unfolded kesho-mawashi. Is the "decorative end" the same width as the rest of it? Or is it a separate piece that is stuffed into a normal mawashi? Maybe seems like a dumb question, but i can't remember any posts or articles on this topic. To be honest i've never seen a normal mawashi being put on. Anyone has a video?

I don't really know but it seems to me there's a regular mawashi of a matching color, when it gets to the last belly wrap the kensho-mawashi is held against the belly and the last wrap of the regular mawashi holds it on. I think there is only about another foot of the kensho mawashi that you don't see in that pic and that the part which is sticking up at their belly when they wear it.

It is quite long - I haven't seen it completely unfolded, some part was rolled, but the closest I came to one was this

On display at the Kashiwa Takashimaya store till the 6th - a 10min ride on the local line from where I dwell, I think I will have a closer look.

I'm not that fond of this Facebook format, but it's the easiest way for me right now:

The closer look at Kisenosato's new keshō-mawashi

Morooka ordered that for Kisenosato from Takashimaya (their mark is on the kesho-mawashi and on the akeni to transport it) - Takashimaya let the Kyoto craftsman Hasegawa produce it.

Kise's hometown is close to Kashiwa.

Wonder how earth shattering this will be. His first yokozuna kit will feature the titular 3 brothers from the "Fist of the North Star" manga series.

In the design for the Hokuto-no-ken kesho-mawashi set for Kisenosato for the first time manga characters from anime are used for a yokozuna set - so far only for individual kesho mawashi, recently Kinnikuman for Chiyotairyu, and also Tetsuwan-atom and Bakabon were used (I post the details later in "Older kesho mawashi")

In the koenkai formed for his ozeki promotion, 2years ago editor-in-chief Horie of Shonen-Jump, which published Hokuto-no-ken, promised a set to Kisenosato, then already struggling on a prolonged yokozuna run, should he make it at last. And Kise said: "Hokuto-no-ken is fine. With Raoh please."

Thus Kisenosato's will show the eldest, Raoh, though the hero is Kenshiro - but Raoh has the motto: "For me there's no retreat, nothing but advance and win" and "There is only one supreme ruler"

001_size9.jpg

the tachi-mochi - till ozeki promotion fixed job for Takayasu - has the youngest, Kenshiro

002_size10.jpg

and the tsuyu-harai (Shohozan) the middle brother Toki

003_size9.jpg

The kesho-mawashi will also show 2 sets of the Big Dipper (Hokuto-7stars) and the North Star (Hokkyokusei) - 15 stars=wins in total. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1812972.html

Decades ago I was informed that, unlike the regular silk mawashi worn for the actual bouts, which goes on next to the skin, they wear a plain loincloth to protect the valuable kesho-mawashi; but I have never attempted to verify this. (Sigh...)

I was curious about this, a little. Since a yokozuna's set gets shared by many different rikishi, and a mawashi gets crammed into some crevices, and cleaning them all the time would be a lot of wear and tear, how do they keep them from getting nasty. A loincloth makes sense.

And may I never think about it too deeply ever again.

I guess the 15th star on Kise's kesho is supposed to be the large stylized one behind Rao's head?

Does Kisenosato now have more Yokozuna kits than Kakuryu & Hatumafuji?

I'd seen the cranes set and I knew the manga set was coming, but this is the first I've seen or heard of the chrysanthemum and cherry blossom set and the Egyptian-looking 'Picasso' set. What're the stories with those?

the chrysanthemum set comes from his local koenkai in Ibaraki.

New Yutakayama for makuuchi debut got a kesho mawashi from the local Niigata branch OB club of his university, Tounoudai, the first one from his locals. Like Terutsuyoshi with a map of home (in dark green) and the main local produce: as the head of a rice plant in yellow and yellow green, the new shikona in red. He plans to use this one from day 11 to 15. http://www.niigata-nippo.co.jp/news/national/20170507322369.html

Hokutofuji from local Tokorozawa sponsor Uchino signboards got his 5th kesho mawashi, with the logo of the corporation. This logo like the new shikonas of the Onamis was inspired by the 3 arrows story for Mori Motonari's 3 sons and also carries the image of a pyramid - with the hope of "pyramid power". Hokutofuji : "Completely different color than the other 4, the blue is beautiful - my lucky color."

Kise switched to his local set on day 6

Kisenosato7.jpg

the design esp. for the tsuyu harai looks quite similar to the old one of Kise from this his local koenkai

l.jpg

The chrysanthemum is the city flower of Ushiku, the tachi-mochi has it with the rising sun, the tsuyu-harai has the Ushiku city bird - the Japanese nightingale - with plum flowers. The landscape is the Ushiku swamp area with the mountain range of Mt. Tsukuba, the yokozuna has the peak - like the Fuji a divine mountain ("Fuji in the west - Tsukuba in the east"). http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20170520/sum17052005030006-n2.html

Likely Kise will use the one sponsored by Picasso inc. (real estate & investment business) on the last 5 days. http://www.zakzak.co.jp/sports/etc_sports/news/20170519/spo1705191700006-n2.htm

The manga set on display next week in the affiliated manga-kissa - Cafe Zenon - the sponsor's Monthly Zenon has started to publish the Kise story manga, their new mangahot app has it as well - the first episode, the 2nd usually will also be for free

On display till tomorrow.

5 kesho-mawashi craftsmen around pure-silk Hakata-ori artisan Hyosuke Kusaka 日下淼介  (77) had worked on the set for 2 ½ months. Usually 1 craftsman works alone on a kesho-mawashi/set - Kusaka did the McLaren for Ishiura in about 2 months www.as-web.jp/info/81659 ).

I searched for Kusaka and found a short note from 2011 about him http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/kantei/kaiun_db/otakara/20110125/02.html

It was not in the family for him  - he somehow entered the company of a friend of his father who did embroidery at age 40. But by the quality of his work and natural sociability, he got famous rikishi to point him out to make their kesho-mawashi - Kitanoumi, Chiyonofuji, Asashoryu, Hakuho etc. - with a share of 40%.

I would love to find the 2004 documentary on him somewhere - the 6th owner of the Miyata embroidery shop: 2004-01-11 お江戸粋いき! 「宮田刺繍舗六代目 日下淼介」 TBS系列 11:40~11:45

It’s fortunate that they went with the Hokuto-no-ken theme.  Just imagine, a Yokozuna’s kesho-mawashi set featuring Hello Kitty!  Do Yokozunas have a say in the designs? (A similar question has been asked before, but I did not see an answer.)  More importantly, do the designs have to be approved by the JSA before they are made?  If not, I’m assuming the JSA would have the power to ban the use of an inappropriate kesho-mawashi or one unbecoming of a Yokozuna.
