Day 15 results, yusho and sansho

Recommended Posts

Harumafuji won against Hakuho in another dynamic performance to secure his third career makuuchi yusho, the first zensho yusho after two 14-1 yusho. Hakuho is left with his 14th jun-yusho, the first time since more than four years with two consecutive basho without a yusho for the yokozuna despite an excellent 14-1 score.

Myogiryu finished kachi-koshi with a win over Takekaze, earning his third consecutive gino-sho (when kachi-koshi) and another promotion to sekiwake, the first collegiate sekiwake in more than eight years. The other open sekiwake spot doesn't have a clear candidate to claim it. It might go to Aoiyama (bypassing a komusubi debut) or Tochinoshin (would be a lucky sekiwake debut too, especially since he fought no ozeki). Or Goeido just shifts from east to west sekiwake. That's rare, but might be the best solution, with Aoiyama and Tochinoshin forming a European komusubi duo.

Kaisei won a big bout against Takanoyama which decided a kanto-sho for him (his second), after Masunoyama got the kanto-sho for eleven wins in his first full makuuchi basho. Takanoyama should go down to juryo with the tenth loss, accompanying Tochinowaka, Tamawashi, Hochiyama and Tamaasuka who all lost for good measure. Ikioi and Sadanofuji were set to go down as well, but with wins today both may just stay, more likely for Sadanofuji though.

Actually, Takanoyama may be more likely to stay than Ikioi as well and probably will so as there are only five possible promotions from juryo with Asasekiryu, Tenkaiho, Kimurayama, Asahisho and Fujiazuma, all good cases actually. Asahisho still must be rueing the loss today as he missed a possible juryo yusho playoff as in a comedy of losses leader Chiyonokuni lost, but none of three pursuers could catch him for the kettei-sen.

Takanoiwa saved the kachi-koshi on the last day, narrowly avoding demotion with the win over Jokoryu. Masakaze had to take a ninth loss though and is likely to go down after only two juryo basho. Tosayutaka, Homarefuji and Masuraumi are sure to go down as well while Oniarashi got himself a sliver of hope with the sixth win today, sitting on a fence similar to kyujo Hokutokuni and Kyokushuho. All those borderline candidates might stay in juryo as there are only four clear promotions from makushita, matching the four clear demotions.

Now to my biggest surprises and letdowns of Nagoya 2012. The surprises are pretty clearly Harumafuji, Kaisei and Masunoyama who all got a prize. Also surprisingly well (for me) did Daido, Tokushoryu and Aoiyama. The biggest letdown actually wasn't Kyokutenho, whose 2-13 was worse than expected but I didn't expect him to that well. Even worse were Hochiyama and Tamaasuka, totally tanking the makuuchi opportunity. Other disappointments were Kyokushuho, Tochinowaka and Kokkai, but all three are injured (or at least look like that in Tochinowaka's case). Takamisakari wasn't any better than Kokkai, but he clearly is getting old and won't last much longer. Staying active for more than 1000 sekitori bouts is a career accomplishment in itself which only 70 rikishi managed to do - Takamisakari is 61st here with 1030 bouts and Kaio is leading here with 1598 bouts, actually closely ahead of Terao at 1595 bouts in juryo or makuuchi.

Here is the query, and among active rikishi Kyokutenho has the most bouts, just overtaking Tosanoumi for fifth place overall. Also more than 1000 have Wakanosato, Miyabiyama and Aminishiki. Nobody else is close with Asasekiryu next at 882.

And perhaps more important than the 1440 M/J total today, senshuraku was his 1200th makuuchi and 1600th career appearance.

BTW, your query includes bouts fought as makushita against juryo opposition, and playoffs. ;-)

Indeed, your data is more important. And the query was intended that way, actually.
