Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted July 21, 2012 Hakuho and Harumafuji came through for another day to give us a yusho decider between two 14-0 rikishi, the seventh such bout in Ozumo history and the first since 1983. This will be the first zensho yusho since Hakuho had four in a row in 2010. The loser will be the 15th 14-1 jun-yusho behind a 15-0 yusho winner, which happened two times since 1983 with Baaruto in Haru 2010 during Hakuho's streak and Wakanohana in Nagoya 1994 during Musashimaru first (and sole zensho) yusho. Goeido will not be able to defend his sekiwake rank as he's gone kyujo but he should still be komusubi next basho. Myogiryu lost with a hearty yoritaoshi to Homasho and needs to beat Takekaze tomorrow to become the first collegiate shin-sekiwake since Tamanoshima in Hatsu 2004 (before him Hayateumi, Kotomitsuki and Tochinonada had three such sekiwake debuts in three consecutive basho from Kyushu 2000 to Haru 2001). That's been a long time without a new college sekiwake, especially with no less then 27 college rikishi with sekitori experience on the current banzuke alone (plus many more since 2004 who are already retired again). Ok, one of those 27 was even ozeki, but still... Aoiyama and Shohozan won against the underperforming two sanyaku rikishi and at 7-7 are getting close to a sanyaku debut, needing a win against lower ranked opponents tomorrow. Of course, Gagamaru and Aran still are in the mix as well. The two juryo leaders Chiyonokuni and Jokoryu fought today with the Kokonoe-beya youngster winning in a good bout and looking set for his first sekitori yusho. Of course he must beat Fujiazuma to avoid a playoff, but I wouldn't bet against him completing a nice turnaround after being kyujo on senshuraku in each of his three makuuchi basho (completely missing the last basho). Asashosakari 16,974 Posted July 21, 2012 Hakuho and Harumafuji came through for another day to give us a yusho decider between two 14-0 rikishi, the seventh such bout in Ozumo history What am I missing? The_Arrow87 7 Posted July 21, 2012 Day 15 Ms10e Kairyu (2-5) J14w Homarefuji (5-9) Kairyu already has fought 7 bouts, but why does he get another bout? And why with a make-koshi at Ms10e against a Juryo rikishi? (Eh?)
Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted July 21, 2012 Hakuho and Harumafuji came through for another day to give us a yusho decider between two 14-0 rikishi, the seventh such bout in Ozumo history What am I missing? (Do you mean zensho vs. zensho on senshuraku, not 14-0 vs. 14-0?) I see I remembered my query from yesterday wrongly... And even more embarrassingly I just see that I queried bouts in makuuchi, not securing the rikishi is from makuuchi and the first bout is a 14-0 juryo visiting makuuchi. So it's the sixth (not seventh) time with two 14-0 makuuchi rikishi on senshuraku but indeed only the fifth time they are actually meeting. The special basho with two 14-0 rikishi not even meeting was in Hatsu 1964.

And why with a make-koshi at Ms10e against a Juryo rikishi? (Eh?) Well... make a suggestion for a torikumi NOT involving an eighth bout for a high makushita rikishi. It's not possible because the day 13 to 15 lower division bouts are fixed before day 13 and Goeido went kyujo today. So an extra visitor from makushita is needed and Kairyu is the lucky guy to possibly get a third win (which would count half for banzuke purposes, but a loss wouldn't be counted against him). Asashosakari 16,974 Posted July 21, 2012 (edited) Indeed Kairyu's arguably the highest-ranked rikishi they could have picked - every makekoshi makushita above him is either 3-4 (which they won't use), or still needs to fight his 7th bout. I think they should've just given it to Kotoyutaka though...a win by him wouldn't affect the promotion queue. Edited July 21, 2012 by Asashosakari
