Mukonoso 273 Posted July 20, 2012 What are your favorite Japanese foods? Whenever I'm in Japan I'm stuffing myself with karage and korokke every chance I get. I also love nikuman. Sushi is a given of course as is Donburi. Desert is usually a cup of Panapp ice cream.
Akinomaki 40,053 Posted July 20, 2012 It took me years to get used to it, but now I like natto very much. Not just to be able to say to a Japanese "Natto is OK". Thoroughly mixed in a bowl of rice with the usual soy sauce and mustard and then negi on top and preferably nukazuke carots cut into pieces.
Mukonoso 273 Posted July 20, 2012 Hmm, interesting. With rice, soy sauce, mustard and negi I might be able to handle natto. It is one of the rare foods my wife refuses to touch. Her father eats it every morning though. Funny side story relating to food. In her family the phrase "Ah, onaka ippai!" actually means "What's next?" LOL. Kuroyama 715 Posted November 4, 2012 I'm all about the okonomiyaki. Hiroshima-style is best. I've always wanted to try that, but even with a plethora of Japanese restaurants in my area I have yet to find any that make it.

Washuyama 638 Posted November 4, 2012 Shoyu-ramen (homemade noodles are a must) and gyoza from one of the awesome small ramen shops. As far as food goes it's what I miss most about Japan.

Mukonoso 273 Posted November 27, 2012 Not sure if really counts as Japanese food, but I've only had it in Japan. On my last trip (or the one before) the McDonald's were doing "shaka shaka chicken" where you got a fried chicken breast in a paper bag and then added your choice different flavored powders, closed the bag and shook it up to coat the chicken. Delicious! The 1st Kitchen chain did something similar with french fries many years ago. Never have seen it since but the pepper/mayo powder was great. IzumoTaisha 2 Posted November 28, 2012 I'm really feeling like some Yoshinoya gyudon right now. For me it is Sukiya or nothing. Grand memories of getting a hunger at 4am and cycling across the city to a 24-Open Sukiya for a large bowl.
