Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted July 20, 2012 Kotoyutaka, Kei and Terashita cemented their promotion bids with a fifth win for all of them, the last two earning their sekitori debuts with wins in juryo. Yamaguchi of course also is a certain promotion, winning the makushita yusho with the seventh win against Higoarashi. Watanabe won against Mitohikari as expected, but has to earn the sandanme yusho in a playoff as Kyokuhozan won against young Kotodairyu from jonidan. The Takanohana-beya rikishi will be in high makushita next basho anyway, becoming second in rank behind Takanoiwa. 20-year-old Tochidaiho from Kasugano-beya is a low sandanme level rikishi but was kyujo last basho and utilized the opportunity of another basho in mid jonidan to the best, winning the jonidan yusho with the win over Mongolian Takakasuga. The jonokuchi yusho will indeed be decided in a do-beya kettei-sen between the the two new Kise-beya college rikishi Hamaguchi and Iwasaki, with Iwasaki coming from slightly more prestigious Nichidai compared to Kinki for Hamaguchi. Vikanohara 171 Posted July 20, 2012 in a playoff as Kyokuhozan won against young Kotodairyu from jonidan. Where did he suddenly find that ? And that's even 10 in a row now, as he also won his final 3 bouts of Natsu basho. 20-year-old Tochidaiho from Kasugano-beya is a low sandanme level rikishi but was kyujo last basho and utilized the opportunity of another basho in mid jonidan to the best And this guy may have all what it takes to become an Ozeki one day ? It's not like he had to beat any particularly notable opponents on the way.
Vikanohara 171 Posted July 20, 2012 I agree on that, but still. What had been his Sandanme record so far ?
Koorifuu 506 Posted July 20, 2012 Yamaguchi keeping the high stardards Myogiryu and Chiyotairyu have set for m15TDs these times! I'm curious to know what his non-common-surname shikona will be.
Asashosakari 16,979 Posted July 20, 2012 I agree on that, but still. What had been his Sandanme record so far ? 66-99 before the basho, but that is made up of a 5-22 in his first four basho when he was unquestionably not of sandanme strength yet, and most results after that were achieved (almost by definition, since he's only Sd87 right now) against higher-ranking sandanme opposition, so it doesn't say that much about his current basho either. Let's put it another way: Of his 7 opponents, only one had a better career-high rank than Kyokuhozan, and that's Wakayama who himself is the beneficiary of a career-high that was inflated by a fluky 7-0. That's not to say that he doesn't deserve the 7-0 record, but it's (probably) more like Kyokutenho's yusho - it's deserved because they did what was needed and nobody else did, but it likely doesn't indicate a breakout performance or a sudden major increase in skills. (Thought experiment to demonstrate the issue: If there was a lower-division tournament made up of 128 Moriuraras, one of them would finish 7-0, too. That's just how the scheduling works.) Washuyama 588 Posted July 20, 2012 If there was a lower-division tournament made up of 128 Moriuraras, one of them would finish 7-0, too. Nah... He would screw it up... The final bout between the two Moriuraras would end up as a draw or they would both stub their toe walking down the hanamichi or something... Double fusen.. ;-)
shimodahito 245 Posted July 21, 2012 Yamaguchi was very impressive.... very forward sumo... and his day 13 win put him in the 5th row. (love that sumo data base!) Is it guaranteed he'll get a new shikona? http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Rikishi_basho.aspx?r=11989&b=201207
