Day 8 results and day 9 pairings, Makuuchi and Juryo

The five makuuchi leaders all improved to 7-1 with Kakuryu beating Baruto in the first ozeki match-up of the basho, and Kotoshogiku limping his way out of the dohyo after the win over Toyonoshima. Only two of the seven pursuers stayed close as Hakuho followed Baruto's loss in more than one way, as he also lost to Goeido who beat Baruto yesterday. With the yokozuna and three foreign ozeki down to 5-3 it looks like there will be a new yusho winner as none of the five leaders has won a makuuchi yusho yet. Shin-ozeki Kakuryu came very close last basho and poses the biggest threat to finally getting a Japanese yusho winner in more than six years (Tochiazuma in Hatsu 2006).

Masunoyama lost to Takanoyama, but another four of the six juryo leaders came through with Tamaasuka, Kyokushuho, Sotairyu and Kimurayama now at 6-2. Satoyama and Asahisho just can't win this basho and are make-koshi already. The two shin-sekitori Masakaze and Jokoryu lost today and are the first in demotion danger (along with Satoyama).
