New Juryo for Natsu Basho 2012

Recommended Posts

Takanoiwa might become sekitori next basho. He said maybe, maybe the whole evening but he sounded quite sure.

Fingers crossed .... that would be another highlight for me at Osaka Basho :-)

I've no doubt he will get promoted. 5 demotions should be sure: Arawashi, Hokutokuni, Sensho, Tsurugidake and Amuru. Kitaharima could maybe stay.

If only one between Hokutokuni and Kitaharima stays in juryo, I'm pretty sure it'll be Hokutokuni. I think they'll both stay and none of the Shironoryu/Takanoiwa/Kei crowd will get promoted, but given the whole new shimpan committee it's not something I'll bet any steaks on.

I suppose the nuttiest solution would be demoting both Hokutokuni and Kitaharima and giving their spots to Takanoiwa and Amuru...

Yes, you should be right again! Haven't noticed the gap between Kitaharima and Hokutokuni. If they promote Takanoiwa, Hokutokuni should be 14 West and Kitaharima Makushita. For Amuru I don't see a chance to stay.

BTW, the more conspiracy-minded on 2ch believe that Sakaigawa-oyakata's recent entry to the shimpan committee will give Shironoryu an inside track to a promotion, presumably paired with Takanoiwa (because otherwise it's a bit too ridiculous) to send down both Hokutokuni and Kitaharima.

Also, from the "may or may not actually be true" file, one poster over there recently claimed that during the days of Hanaregoma-oyakata as shimpan-bucho (can't remember when exactly that was, around mid-aughts), "kind treatment" of borderline demotable juryo rikishi was more likely if the rikishi in question was the stable's only sekitori.

As much as I like Shironoryu but we agreed about it last night, that he doesn't have a chance, Let's see if Sakaigawe Oyakata and the shimpan committee think so too ;-)

New:

政風 Masakaze ? (ex-Kitazono, 28 years old, Oguruma-beya)

常幸龍 Tsunekoryu? Jokoryu (ex-Sakumayama, 23 years old, Kise-beya*)

I have no idea about either reading at all, Jiji Press unfortunately weren't helpful enough to include kana. Hopefully some other outlet will (or we'll have to wait for the Kyokai site). Fastest sekitori debut in history from a maezumo start for the former Sakumayama, tying him at 6 basho with Itai and Tosayutaka. Ex-Kitazono at 36 basho is the 4th-slowest riser from a university background.

Returning:

Tokushoryu (25 years old, Kise-beya*)

Homarefuji (26 years old, Isegahama-beya)

* Yes, already announced as such, by Jiji anyway.

Told ya there wouldn't be any 5th promotion...

Tsunekoryu doesn't sound very inspiring, but neither does any other reading I could imagine.

Not much of a surprise, but I am glad to see Homarefuji back. Except on the dohyo, I have never seen that guy without a smile on his face.

Jokoryu? The ST contributer inside of me is rubbing his hands, but really?

I'm gonna have a field day with that one, to the utter annoyance of my peers.. Joukouryuu..

So I guess he'll be either Joe or the Joker around here...

Or Joe Kouryuu, or Jokes on you. I always wanted to go with "It's not Joe Dan!!", I kid you not. (let's see if that registers..)

Immensely on the one hand, and I'm on a serious mission, OTOH..

I have to say, for such a promising rikishi it's a really rubbish shikona.

You must be Joe King... ;-)

Anyway, I suggest some other shikona change for a notorious henkster:

HenkAran

Maybe it would safe some of his opponents/victims from plunging face forward to the clay

Babs, that will be confirmed on the banzuke when released. I think that is also referred to elsewhere. At best now are educated guesses. :-)

I have absolutely no way of looking this up, but I suspect that four promotions to juryo by collegiate rikishi for a single basho may well tie or beat the record.

Edit: Actually, I'm a huge liar, as there's a very easy quick'n'dirty way after all. I completely forgot about last year's Natsu already, d'oh. But for regular tournaments it seems to be correct, first time with 4 collegiates making the move in the same basho.

Incidentally, the "meaningful" reading of Sakuma's new shikona is probably something like "Ever-Lasting Fortune Dragon". A bit better than the mere sound, at any rate.

Conversely, "Masakaze" doesn't really have any intrinsic meaning at all, at least not to Kitazono himself - it's a creation by his family and he went with it more for sound than meaning.

It may sound a bit harsh, but maybe we will see some "massacres" in the Juryo division...
