What is the Gyoji saying?

Recommended Posts

Can someone point to a glossary of the varous phrases the Gyoji uses during a match?

(I did a forum search and didn't find anything).

There's some good info in this thread, with a very similar title too. :-)

You might also want to check the (huge) "Glossary of Sumo Terms" section, which can be found on the front page of this forum.

When you get there, look up "nokotta" & "hakke-yoi" (Gyoji...)

"Shobu ari" = we have a decision, said at the end of the match, Kintamayama learned me that one only the other day :) Oh and also during the Dohyo-iri, the crowd shout yo sho! which someone told me is a bit like "heave-ho!"

(i really hope i'm right about that second bit, i'm only relying on my memory, hence my worry hehe)

Edit* pardon me i was wrong, it's "Yoisho!"

before tachi-ai, the gyoji says

"jikan desu" = it's time

or

"matta nashi" = no (more) matta

then

"te o tsuite" = put your hands (on the clay)
