Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted May 10, 2004 Today three Sanyaku lost to Maegashira rikishi, most notably Hokutoriki winning against the second Ozeki in two days. Now Yokozuna Asashoryu and Ozeki Chiyotaikai already are the only undefeated Sanyaku and look like very early yusho favorites. Of course eight Hiramaku rikishi also are 2-0, but they will have to prove themselves over the course of the basho. Hagiwara won the much-awaited matchup with Kotooshu, utilizing a slip from the big Bulgarian and then smothering him with an abisetaoshi. The third shin-Juryo Toyonoshima, smallest Sekitori with an height of 169 cm, started well winning his first two bouts. -- Doitsuyama Day 2 Juryo J14w Wakakosho (2-0) hikiotoshi J13e Daishodai (0-2) J13w Toyonoshima (2-0) sukuinage J14e Tochifudo (0-2) J12w Hagiwara (1-1) abisetaoshi J10e Kotooshu (1-1) J10w Tokitenku (2-0) yorikiri J12e Dewanofuji (1-1) J11e Hamanishiki (1-1) yorikiri J9w Sumanofuji (0-2) J9e Bushuyama (1-1) yorikiri J7w Gojoro (0-2) J6e Takanotsuru (2-0) yorikiri J8w Wakanoyama (1-1) J6w Roho (2-0) hatakikomi J8e Tamarikido (1-1) J7e Ama (1-1) okuridashi J5w Kitazakura (0-2) J4w Oikari (1-1) hikiotoshi J3e Yotsukasa (0-2) J5e Chiyotenzan (2-0) yorikiri J3w Wakatoba (0-2) J2w Otsukasa (2-0) yorikiri J4e Kaido (1-1) J2e Kasugao (2-0) kotenage J1e Tamakasuga (0-2) Makuuchi M16w Takanowaka (1-1) yorikiri J1w Toyozakura (0-2) M15w Futeno (2-0) yorikiri M17e Kobo (1-1) M16e Hakuho (2-0) oshidashi M14w Asanowaka (0-2) M13w Kinkaiyama (2-0) yoritaoshi M12e Kaiho (1-1) M12w Jumonji (1-1) oshidashi M13e Takanonami (0-2) M9e Kotoryu (2-0) ashitori M11w Hayateumi (0-2) M9w Tosanoumi (1-1) oshidashi M11e Aminishiki (1-1) M10w Toki (1-1) hikiotoshi M8e Takekaze (1-1) M8w Tochisakae (1-1) oshidashi M10e Harunoyama (1-1) M5e Kotonowaka (1-1) tsukidashi M7w Kyokushuzan (0-2) M5w Tamanoshima (2-0) oshitaoshi M7e Kokkai (1-1) M4e Tokitsuumi (2-0) sukuinage M6w Iwakiyama (1-1) M4w Takamisakari (1-1) hikiotoshi M6e Buyuzan (0-2) M3e Shimotori (2-0) oshidashi K1e Miyabiyama (0-2) M1e Tochinonada (1-1) yorikiri S1e Wakanosato (1-1) S1w Kyokutenho (1-1) uwatenage M3w Dejima (0-2) O1e Chiyotaikai (2-0) oshidashi M2e Asasekiryu (0-2) M1w Hokutoriki (2-0) oshidashi O2e Musoyama (1-1) O1w Kaio (1-1) hatakikomi K1w Kotomitsuki (1-1) Y1e Asashoryu (2-0) hikiotoshi M2w Kakizoe (0-2) Day 3 Makushita Ms10e Kotokuni (0-1) Ms11w Fukkoyama (0-1) Ms8e Chiyohakuho (1-0) Ms9w Fujinoyama (1-0) Ms5w Kotoshogiku (1-0) Ms3w Daimanazuru (1-0) Ms3e Kotonomine (0-1) Ms1w Maikaze (0-1) Ms1e Kotokasuga (1-0) Ms2e Juzan (1-0) Juryo J14w Wakakosho (2-0) J13w Toyonoshima (2-0) J14e Tochifudo (0-2) J10w Tokitenku (2-0) J10e Kotooshu (1-1) J13e Daishodai (0-2) J12e Dewanofuji (1-1) J9w Sumanofuji (0-2) J11e Hamanishiki (1-1) J8w Wakanoyama (1-1) J8e Tamarikido (1-1) J12w Hagiwara (1-1) J6e Takanotsuru (2-0) J9e Bushuyama (1-1) J5e Chiyotenzan (2-0) J7w Gojoro (0-2) J4e Kaido (1-1) J7e Ama (1-1) J3e Yotsukasa (0-2) J6w Roho (2-0) J4w Oikari (1-1) J2w Otsukasa (2-0) J3w Wakatoba (0-2) J1w Toyozakura (0-2) J1e Tamakasuga (0-2) J5w Kitazakura (0-2) Makuuchi M16e Hakuho (2-0) J2e Kasugao (2-0) M16w Takanowaka (1-1) M13w Kinkaiyama (2-0) M13e Takanonami (0-2) M17e Kobo (1-1) M15w Futeno (2-0) M11w Hayateumi (0-2) M11e Aminishiki (1-1) M14w Asanowaka (0-2) M12w Jumonji (1-1) M8w Tochisakae (1-1) M8e Takekaze (1-1) M12e Kaiho (1-1) M10w Toki (1-1) M7w Kyokushuzan (0-2) M7e Kokkai (1-1) M10e Harunoyama (1-1) M9e Kotoryu (2-0) M6w Iwakiyama (1-1) M6e Buyuzan (0-2) M9w Tosanoumi (1-1) M5e Kotonowaka (1-1) M2w Kakizoe (0-2) M5w Tamanoshima (2-0) M1w Hokutoriki (2-0) M4w Takamisakari (1-1) K1w Kotomitsuki (1-1) M4e Tokitsuumi (2-0) S1w Kyokutenho (1-1) S1e Wakanosato (1-1) M3w Dejima (0-2) M2e Asasekiryu (0-2) O1w Kaio (1-1) O1e Chiyotaikai (2-0) K1e Miyabiyama (0-2) O2e Musoyama (1-1) M3e Shimotori (2-0) Y1e Asashoryu (2-0) M1e Tochinonada (1-1)
Asashosakari 19,543 Posted May 10, 2004 (edited) The third shin-Juryo Toyonoshima, smallest Sekitori with an height of 169 cm He's listed by the Kyokai as 171 cm now. Must've grown a bit since hatsu-dohyo. :-P Edited May 10, 2004 by Asashosakari
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 10, 2004 hokutoriki gets his second gino-sho today and amazes me ..... :-P he was REALLY strong against two of the heaviest rikishi in makuchi . I haven't even seen Chiyo oshi that good against Muso and Kaio...... Asashoryu was Asashoryu Kaio was better today but i sense he is going to have a tough day tomorrow. Chiyo looks stronger than last basho and is probably the only one going for yusho. Sekiryu is 0-2 but looks better than that... I personally like Tokitsuumi these first two days..... Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted May 10, 2004 Hokutoriki's basho has been a long wet dream so far. Twice has he managed to get his ultimate weapon in full use. Nobody is as good as Hoku in using an extended arm push to great affect. Usually he doesn't get the chance to really rub it into his foes' throats but now he has done that twice to ozeki caliber opponent. KaioU was allegedly having bad back pain prior to basho and he was close to stay kyujo at first at least. On day 1 shikiri you can see one of the best examples of how to spot back pain. Watch the final crouch down before tachi-ai. He does it from side to side which is classic "positioning of the back" to as pain-free posture as possible before the tachi-ai. On day 2 he was far from doing sumo and only won due to Kotomitsuki's slip. Then again he is KaioU and can get better all of a sudden and start doing sumo. For now he is very insufficient on the dohyo and Sekiryu's spirited battles against ozeki may be rewarded on day 3. Shimotori is a rikishi whose left hand outside is to be avoided. Kyokutenho gave up that and was yorikiried. Today against Miyabiyama Shimotori did powerful oshi but on Miya's behalf it must be said that Miya was so bad it hurts. Shimotori is looking very strong though but tomorrow is a big day against Angle Muso. If he can match the crude power against Muso, then he is in his best condition of his life. Takanonami has never looked this finished. Not only does he not have any training foes in his heya, he probably doesn't do keiko much at all anymore and in between Haru and Natsu, he may have lost more power than ever before in between bashos. It is possible that his ankles are really bad too though. In any case he was out of chance against Kinkaiyama and today against Jumonji he voluntarely changed the Jumonji-kill move into a silly series of pulldowns! Nami knows better but to me it was a weird act and possible an indication of total loss of power. Kobo isn't easy to him tomorrow either as it is the first Featured rikishi-match-up and I heard from reliable sources that in sumo world any match-up between Featured Rikishi is extra motivated!!! :-P Kaido in juryo started very strongly but lost to Otsupotsu due to bad case of yotsu-stance pursuit failure letting Potsu hold all the keys. Still Kaido starts every bout in this basho with at least 50-50 chance. Refute that if you wish. Mongolians are very genki! Shoryu, Sekiryu, Tokitenku, Ama all look very good. Tenho is not bad either and Shuzan's genkiness is always hidden anyway. There was a picture from jungyo where Ama wears a shoulder bandage and now he chucks some salt onto his left shoulder before bout starts. This leads to concluiosn that he has suffered shoulder injury during jungyo but it has healed pretty well by now. Strong left-yotsu finish today against Kitazakura although Ama pummeled him mainloy with right hand in tsuki. Maybe that is his way in any case.

Hakuho has looked good too (is he on his way to become a "I have heard of none such rikishi" of yours, or do you just think he's been less than impressive?) so it's really only Kyokushuzan among the mongolians who looks bad and personally I think he hides little and will rather have one of his off-bashos... :-P I like the newcomer Toyonoshima this far although Daishodai and Tochifudo hardly are the worst opponents he will meet... Nice sukuinage today :-/ Edited May 10, 2004 by Yubiquitoyama
Asashosakari 19,543 Posted May 10, 2004 I personally like Tokitsuumi these first two days..... Very interesting bearhug technique from Tokitsuumi today...I was surprised he could actually reach around Iwakiyama and clasp his hands on Iwaki's back. :-P

Kobo isn't easy to him tomorrow either as it is the first Featured rikishi-match-up and I heard from reliable sources that in sumo world any match-up between Featured Rikishi is extra motivated!!! :-) This is the match that really stuck out in my mind. Nami looks defeated even before the match starts. He looks totally unfocused, and unmotivated. Its like he doesn't care whether he wins or not. At M13 he could stay in Makuuchi with 5-6 wins depending on banzuke luck, but if he doesn't turn things around fast, I think more than 4 wins could be a long shot. Even if he does survive to another basho, the chances of him getting through Nagoya are slim slim slim. This is the heya formerly known as Futagoyama's last stand. I'm sure Nami make a great Oyakata, and wonder what he plans to do. As for the battle of former fetured rikishi, I'm going with Kobo. I'm sure Kobo would love to stay in Makuuchi for another term, something I can't say about Nami this time.
Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted May 10, 2004 Hakuho has looked good too (is he on his way to become a "I have heard of none such rikishi" of yours, or do you just think he's been less than impressive?) No...I forgot him probably because his two bouts have been sort of invisible. First an ole against listless Takanowaka and then disposal of the disposee. Asanowaka did give him a mean slap at the end.

Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted May 10, 2004 I too think a Takanonami intai is not far. It might even happen this basho. But should I change my avatar? I don't know at this point. Thanks for the excellent summary Kaikitsune-zeki, and comments from everyone. :-)
Kashunowaka 300 Posted May 10, 2004 Kotoryu! If someone had told you that the winning kimarite in the bout between Kotoryu and Hayateumi would be ashitori, would you have guessed the right winner? :-)
Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted May 10, 2004 Kotoryu! If someone had told you that the winning kimarite in the bout between Kotoryu and Hayateumi would be ashitori, would you have guessed the right winner? :-D I probably would have guessed Kotoryū, yes. Giving Hayateumi's lately tendency for a "flying tachi-ai" (which has been very successful), his foot could be one of the easier to get for everyone.
hoshidango 0 Posted May 11, 2004 1 Agreed on Nami for sure. 2 Kokkai's half-hearted suicidal Inashi... Isn't it unlike him? He was making face, too. 3 What do you guys think was the ASS..anowaka's slap as he got pushed out for?

Ahhh ... don't be such a spoil-sport. :-( You are right about Hayateumi's often ill-advised tachi-ai of course. But Air Hayate didn't take off yesterday. And kimarite involving leg picks are rare anyway, so I think it's worthy of a mention.
