Doitsuyama 1,185 Posted January 22, 2012 Sakumayama and Chiyootori showed in the makushita kettei-sen that they clearly belong in a higher division and with the luck of the draw they met in the kettei-sen final with Sakumayama winning his third lower division yusho in his young career. 19 years old Chiyootori will the youngest active sekitori by far at 19 years and 5 months in March, sharing 19th place for youngest juryo debuts since 1960 (together with rikishi like Takanonami, Onokuni or Chiyonofuji). The last rikishi to make it to juryo before their 20th birthday were Tochiozan, Kisenosato, Harumafuji, Hakuho, Tochiazuma, Chiyotaikai and Kaio so Chiyootori seems to be a fairly sure future ozeki prospect. 28 years old Mongolian Sensho might also be good enough to become a sekitori mainstay but the other promotees Satoyama and Arawashi have shown before that lower juryo is their ceiling. Hitenryu finished 5-2 to round up his first kachi-koshi since his super-lucky juryo promotion with 4-3 from Ms10 after Natsu last year. Mongolian Takanoiwa and Chiyomaru are two possible future sekitori and both young rikishi finished 5-2 with wins today, possibly reaching new career high ranks. Kotokawazu won the sandanme yusho playoff against heavy Natsu 2011 classmate Kenho, showing a nice shitatenage. With the late blooming tendency of Japanese rikishi in Sadogatake-beya I think we can expect a good future for the 19 years old yusho winner. Also remarkable are the makushita promotions for young Terutsuyoshi who became 17 years old just five days ago and finished with a good 5-2, and somewhat underweight Mongolian Chiyoshoma who even scored a 6-1 with a final win. Asashosakari 19,344 Posted January 22, 2012 The just-the-facts version is already available courtesy of araibira, of course, but if anyone's interested in the lower division playoffs with all the trimmings:
yorikiried by fate 2,028 Posted January 23, 2012 Hey thanks, I would have asked for that! Kotokawazu is really happy after his win. Very refreshing to see such emotions. Sakumayama is a real character, practically got a spring in his step on the way out. BTW: Cameraman-sho for the cameraman. He really captures nicely all the other particpants like gyoji and yobidahi. Yubinhaad 11,698 Posted January 23, 2012 Thanks Asashosakari! We don't see him again after the bout, but the time taken for Kotokawazu to bow suggested Kenho was injured in some way. And then when the Makushita boys trooped out for their kettei-sen, I noticed some salt had been chucked onto the dohyo, which I believe only happens in the lower divisions when there's an injury? Good eye. It did get awfully quiet in the arena for a moment, too. Did he break a toe or rupture a ligament in his left foot when he was leaned so far forward during the throw? Or maybe an awkward landing impact on his left elbow...really hard to tell.

True. The nearest yobidashi gets a handful of salt and throws it on the part of the ring where the injury happened. Orion
