Day 12 results and day 13 pairings

Recommended Posts

Everything henka went for Baruto today as his opponent Kisenosato failed to locate Baruto on the dohyo despite his size and three bouts later his sole pursuer Hakuho missed Harumafuji with his aggressive tachi-ai. Tochiozan, the other rikishi at two losses also fell behind with a loss to strong shin-makuuchi Chiyonokuni and joined a six rikishi strong group at 9-3 with very theoretical yusho chances as Baruto is still undefeated at 12-0. The senshuraku highlight between Baruto and Hakuho might become meaningless for the yusho if Baruto doesn't lose against Kotoshogiku or Kotooshu. Kotoshogiku meanwhile advanced to 7-5 but still must face three very difficult opponents in his quest for kachi-koshi.

All those first meetings in makuuchi this basho let me look a bit in Sumo Reference and indeed this basho already set a record for most first meetings in a basho since 1960 with two days yet to go. This is most likely a carry-over from juryo with all those new guys now arriving or reaching higher regions in makuuchi as the Aki basho last year set a new record since 1967 (size of juryo got severly reduced in Natsu 1967 making further comparisons unfair) and Kyushu wasn't that far behind.

The juryo yusho race is a lot closer with three rikishi now at 10-2 as Sotairyu beat Chiyotairyu and Amuru's suspect defense got exposed after Kotoyuki withered the initial attack from the Russian. Tamawashi, Wakanosato and Ikioi all got kachi-koshi today with good chances for a makuuchi promotion. Tokushoryu is down to 1-11 and probably needs to win out to avoid demotion. Tochinonada, Masuraumi, Tokushinho, Kitaharima and returning Hokutokuni all need two more wins so there potentially can be a lot more demotions along with the two already make-koshi juryo-jiri. Oh, and Oiwato also needs one more win to stay.

(Why on Earth did I just post this in the lower division thread five minutes ago? Now in the correct place...)

Yup, still only two definite demotions from juryo, but lots and lots of contenders (+ marks number of wins needed):

Rank Rikishi Rec + Tsho Tochi Oiwa Masu Hoku Tshin Kita
J6e Tokushoryu 1-11 3 --- L06 x13 --- ---
J8e Tochinonada 3-9 2 W06 ---	x13 L08 L07
J9w Oiwato 4-8 1 x13	--- W03 --- W10
J10w Masuraumi 4-8 2 x13 W08	L03 --- W11 W06 L05
J11e Hokutokuni 4-7-1 2 --- L11 --- W02 W06
J12w Tokushinho 5-7 2 --- W07 L06 L02 --- ---
J13e Kitaharima 5-7 2 --- L10 W05 L06 ---

Could be lots of rikishi needing to go 2-0 after tomorrow, and still five possible bouts among them so there's some room to engineer demotions by matching them directly. Only Arawashi remains as an exchange bout contender from makushita, everybody else is already pencilled in for Day 13 (including Kitazono against Kitaharima).

Maybe because those five minutes ago this thread didn't exist? (Shaking head...)

Yes, but I was waiting for it to come, I just blacked out apparently and forgot that that's what I was doing. No matter. (Sigh...)
