Rōnin 0 Posted January 8, 2012 (edited) Particularly enjoyed Takekaze's katasukashi against Shogi in today's bouts. Working tonight again, so won't be able to start viewing the basho live until day three. So yeah, thanks to Kintamayama for saving the day for me once again. I also wasn't aware that Takayasu was half Filipino until this video, (have been following Masunoyama and his story as well). Cheers toeveryone from east coast USA... Vikanohara 171 Posted January 9, 2012 A couple good fights, but overall not that great today. But there's plenty more to come, thanks to Kinta. (In jonokuchi...)
Bugman 384 Posted January 9, 2012 The description of the "technique hitherto unknown to man" made me chuckle, is it really the first time it has ever been used? I saw a documentary some months back that a fellow forum poster made a link to, in which it said that there are some Kimarite that have never been used, or at least never in a offical basho match, Kotehineri was one of those perhaps? A big thank you for day 2 :) i really hope Aoiyama starts getting some wins.
Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted January 9, 2012 I saw a documentary some months back that a fellow forum poster made a link to, in which it said that there are some Kimarite that have never been used, or at least never in a offical basho match, Kotehineri was one of those perhaps? kotehineri My inadequate database certainly does have only a small part of all ever recorded kimarite (only 468.885 bouts with kimarite), and there indeed are two kimarite for which I don't have a single bout: kakezori and sototasukizori. Asashosakari 18,868 Posted January 9, 2012 (edited) I saw a documentary some months back that a fellow forum poster made a link to, in which it said that there are some Kimarite that have never been used, or at least never in a offical basho match, Kotehineri was one of those perhaps? No, kotehineri isn't quite that rare. It's difficult to say what "never been used" means - most of the time it's probably said to refer to makuuchi only, or perhaps makuuchi + juryo. Sumo Reference has kimarite going back to 1927 for makuuchi, back to 1956 for juryo, and back to 1991 for the lower divisions. Within that set of records, 3 of the 4 most rare kimarite (among those still recognized today) are back body drop-type techniques: kakezori - not registered yet sototasukizori - not registered yet shumokuzori - once in makuuchi in 1929 The last one is, a bit surprisingly, okurigake - occured once in jonokuchi four years ago. Granted, that technique has only been recognized for 11 years, but the others that were added in 2001 have been somewhat more prevalent. (But really, the most amusing part of that okurigake is that it was performed by a rikishi named Kagaya - who isn't the Kagaya who's actually known for his kimarite exploits.) Edit: Slow post is sloooow. Edited January 9, 2012 by Asashosakari
Bugman 384 Posted January 9, 2012 Thank you for the answers much appreciated :) just as an afterthought, i found myself thinking today how much i admire wrestlers like Sagatsukasa and Toyonoshima, shorter wrestlers but very skilled and exciting to watch, i'm really starting to appreciate their technique. It's strange really, i started off with three or four favourite wrestlers that i backed when i first started watching, then over time as i see more Sumo and the huge effort being a rikishi involves, i find that i pretty much support every single wrestler, it's not like football at all for me where i support only one team, Sumo is very different. Yubinhaad 11,573 Posted January 9, 2012 FWIW, Takayama-san once told me that he'd heard sototasukizori was the kimarite in this Juryo bout. Can't be confirmed of course as there were no official records of kimarite for Juryo back then. But still, it's nice to think it might have happened.

Onibushou 61 Posted January 11, 2012 And double thanks for day 2. I was watching the stream that day, but my internet connection cut out about halfway through the gyoji calling out the day's match-ups. By the time it came back they were long finished (Bouncing of excitement...)

Bugman 384 Posted January 11, 2012 Blimey, some exciting matches today, the *Tochinoshin - Sadanofuji* bout was a real struggle that kept me on the edge of my seat, *Toyonoshima - Kisenosato* was awesome too, heck they were all great i thought, i just wish Aoiyama would get a few wins, he looks tired, in the last Basho he did so well. The *Baruto - Wakakoyu* match was very exciting too, i really hope the Gyoji is ok though, that looked dangerous. With regard to the video compilation itself, love the new zoom-in-out effect before the matches, great stuff, thanks again Kintamayama :)
Treblemaker 254 Posted January 12, 2012 A lot of good intensive bouts... I guess the "new blood" also means the status quo of the Old Guard is history, for now. Some quality, exciting matches. I add my Thank You to Spinster Aunt for the videos. For those of us on the other side of the planet, we really appreciate the incredible work.
