I don't know the background mentioned at the end of the video about Baruto, (Sign of approval...)

No background - he simply isn't doing well.

NHK brief news reports focusing on Kotoshogiku and Kisenosato. Open links and then click on "play". Videos typically remain available for about 5 days, will probably be replaced daily by further 2 or 3 minute videos throughout the basho.

I really enjoy Myogiryu's sumo this basho.

And Takarafuji -- I have a feeling that he has such a great potential that id just waiting for him to discover...

I just want to use this reply to give my humble thanks to Kintamayama. Your videos make watching sumo so much more comfortable for the overseas sumo fans who aren't subscribed to Japan tv. Thank you lots!

This is shaping up to be a weird basho:

- Very few - if any - henkas. Is this indicative of the change in offensive strategy that the rikishi are chosing, or simply the lack of people who would resort to such a move? Almost none from the usual culprits (Aran, Aminishiki.... Where's Henkuba when you need him?)

- Lots and lots of pushing/shoving and a scarcity of any belt-on-belt matches. In fact, of the Day 8 bouts viewed, I counted 4: Kokkai/Kitataiki, Toyonoshima/Okinoumi, Homasho/Goeido and Baruto/Aran. And you can't really include the Geeku/Kak bout, because belly-bumping isn't a mawashi battle in the strictest sense, although a nice throw resulted. It just seems everyone and their brother is pulling, shoving, slapping down, and if throws result, it's usually because of Plan B, rather than the primary goal.

And the new Tate-Gyoji is not like the old one. Can't get used to him yet.

And what happened in that Kise-Osh bout? After seeing the video several time in slow-mo, I still can't figure out what sent Origami off on that trip to Row 10.... Must be Newton's Law or something.

Few, if any, henkas? Are you watching the Kyushu basho? If you had said few, if any, successful henkas, then you'd be closer to the reality.

Case in point for one of the successful henkas is indeed the Osh-Kise bout. Osh just happened to pull it at the end of the bout rather than the tachi ai! :-)

Yeah, ok, what you said.

FWIW, he's been a Shikimori all his life and now, in the final stage, he becomes a Kimura. Some men in his position don't attempt to change in small but important ways -- such as the way of holding the gumbai. Others do. Haven't had time to take a close look at this one since his promotion -- has he adapted or has he stayed with what is second nature?

Interesting that the Kyokai still hasn't decided on a new S. Inosuke. What with men refusing the honor through ill-health, the first one in good standing (and good condition) is Waiichiro, who I'd think is much too young to be elevated at this time.

Which brings the next question: Has any former (retired or otherwise) rikishi ever become a Gyoji?

Thanks, Moti! I'm really enjoying your videos (& the commentary). You're right about the weird day.

It was great seeing that special guest. He looks like he could climb right back onto that dohyo.
