The makuuchi leaders are staying largely the same with only Aminishiki falling out after a kotenage loss to Daido. Homasho completed the ozeki sweep with a dominating win over Harumafuji who is not a yokozuna anytime soon. The only loss of the hot komusubi candidate so far was against yokozuna Hakuho, but the toughest opponents this basho might be the three sekiwake who are a combined 10-2 as all won today and are looking much better than the ozeki group.

in the last year Kokkai looked like he didn't belong to the sekitori class anymore, profiting from banzuke luck despite bad sumo and bad results (like moving up with a 5-10 in mid-juryo in Natsu). But since the last third of the last basho he has turned the tables, going 8-1 since then and suddenly looks like a makuuchi regular again. Kyokutenho also is 4-0 but this was much more predictable as the typical elevator rikishi didn't have a make-koshi below M9 for more than twelve years and it doesn't look like he will have another one until his retirement.

Matsutani and Hokutokuni are the two juryo leaders at 4-0 with eight rikishi following at 3-1, including Myogiryu and shin-sekitori Kimikaze, Kyokushuho and Chiyoarashi. The other three shin-deshi are struggling as Kotoyuki and Chiyozakura are winless and Hishofuji is down to 1-3.
