It's about time they got weighed- rikishi weigh-in September 2011

The rikishi had their checkups today, where they get weighed, among other things (I haven't got weighed for leeks..). Heaviest rikishi- Sandanme Russian Oorora- at a hearty 273 kilos. Heaviest Makuuchi- Georgian Gagamaru at 198.7, down from 200. "It's because I'm not eating breakfast.." he explained. Lightest sekitori- probably newmaku Takanoyama at 98 kilos. If he does get promoted, it will be the first time since 1997 (Mainoumi) that we'll have an under 100 kilo Makuuchi fighter. "Not much huh? I'll eat as much as I possibly can to add to my weight," he said.

In a way, I'm surprised that Orora's still around. He' 28, been in the game since 2000 (67 tournaments!), and was 5-2 in July at Sd16. He might make it back to Ms this basho... and at his age and condition, I'm happy for him.

Orora has a medical condition that causes his obesity. Sumo gives him a livelihood that he could not have attained in Russia with his condition. He will stay in sumo for as long as he can. His rank has negligible meaning to him.

That purse must weigh at least a kilo - who knows what is in there. And another thing-he is 9 kilos less (!!) than when last weighed in February. Heatwave? Who knows.

Additional weigh-ins today and we have a tie- Juryo Hishoufuji tipped the scales at 199 kilos, tying Gagamaru for the "heaviest sekitori" title. "I didn't eat or drink anything this morning. I should have drunk some water.." he said, just missing out on the "heaviest one" title.
