Rikishi Talk the Senshuraku Nagoya 2011

Recommended Posts

Kakizoe, Juryo West 11 (1-14) losing to Aoiyama

-----------------------------------------------------------

(Former komusubi beaten by Juryo debut Aoiyama today and certain demotion to Makushita, perhaps reaching the end of his career.)

"I've done all my best but you know, you can be all psyched up but if you don't have strength, in this world you cannot win. I am fully aware of the consequence and fully prepared for it."

(Return to Juryo solely because of vacancy created after the Yaocho incident but to be demoted back to Makushita in one basho.)

"It's so apparent that I lack sharpness. I can't generate power. I know all that myself more than anyone else."

Fujiazuma (10-5) over Masunoyama by yoritaoshi, 14.4 sec

----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Winning 10 in his Makuuchi debut basho)

"I was able to go with my own sumo pretty much in the first half, it even surprised myself. But I realized that I was yet no match against high ranking rikishi. I think I can give myself a score of 60 this basho."

Takamisakari (3-12) losing to Takayasu by hatakikomi, 6.1 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Certain demotion to Juryo after suffering 12 losses, equalling his worst record.)

"There is no question I will keep going on in the next basho. I just need to rebuild and train all over again so I can move better."

Kimurayama (7-8) losing to Gagamaru by oshidashi, 2.8 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Despite suffering Makekoshi on the Senshuraku at the lowest Makuuchi ranking but may yet be able to avoid Juryo demotion as they are increasing two more spots in Makuuchi next basho.)

"I don't know but with my luck, you never know. I have no idea why I was so tense today."

(If he stays in, it may be a demotion to his heya mate and one rank up Tochinonada who finished with 6-9.)

"That, again, in itself, is pretty sad to see too."

Wakanosato (9-6) over Sagatsukasa by yorikiri, 4.3 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------

(Missing Kanto-sho while his name was bandied around among some selection committee members.)

"Well I figured with only nine wins, I would not make it. Actually I was just happy knowing one or two people even thought I could have been qualified for it. And that could motivate me to do all my best again."

Toyonoshima (9-6) over Miyabiyama by oshidashi, 5.8 sec

---------------------------------------------------------------------

(Certain to be back in Sanyaku next basho)

"Like the three sekiwake we have, I realize I would not be able to aim for higher unless I first get myself stablized at the rank."

Aminishiki (2-13) losing to Goeido by uwatenage, 6.1 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------

(Finishing with 2 win 13 loss record, appearing to be totally bewildered.)

"I haven't shown a decent sumo at all."

(Asked if it was a basho like no other.)

"I have no idea at all."

Kakuryu (10-5) over Aran by yorikiri, 20.5 sec

----------------------------------------------------------

(Winning 12 last basho and showing a sign of stability after finishing with a double digit win record this basho and a chance for ozeki promotion next basho.)

"I will be approaching the next basho like any other regular basho, not getting too conscious of all that."

(On Kotoshogiku also aiming for the same.)

"Well I do have a sense of not getting beaten over by him."

Homasho (11-4) losing to Kotoshogku by yorikiri, 11.1 sec

---------------------------------------------------------------------

(Getting his fifth Kanto-sho)

"I have been able to finish the basho by not giving up till the end. I guess getting married and learning of a baby to be born was a big factor too. In some respect I have been lucky too in some of my bouts. I am on a good groove so I want to carry on like this from now on by somehow breaking the wall separating me from joining the top ranks by training even harder."

Kotoshogiku (11-4) over Homasho

------------------------------------------------

(Getting 11 wins in his first ozeki promotion challenging basho, with oh so close but no cigar result but still retains a hope in the next basho.)

"It's been such a long basho. I will have to reset my mind and consider this basho a good learning experience and do all my best in the next basho."

(On receiving Shukun-sho)

"This is a real bonus. I was under heavy pressure all throughout this basho but I want to make this basho as something I can look back on and say because I went through it, I was able to accomplish more."

(On ozeki promotion)

"You need both strong mind and body working together to keep winning. I know I need to strengthen my mental side more next basho so that I can accomplish what I could not have done this basho."

(Kotoshogiku will need at lea st 12 win next basho to have any chance of ozeki promotion.)

Hanaregoma oyakata

-----------------------------

(On Kotoshogiku and Kakuryu)

"It's good to have strong rivals competing for the same goal. It will motivate you more and will make you work that much harder."

Okinoumi (8-7) over Kotooshu by yorikiri, 5.2 sec

-------------------------------------------------------------

(Getting kachikoshi this basho even after facing mostly top ranking rikishi.)

"This basho has been a real confidence builder for me. I admit quality wise I did not do so well in some but at the same time I feel I could have won some more."

(On beating Ozeki Kotooshu to get Kachikoshi)

"The fact that I was able to win on the Senshuraku really made me happy. It just made me wonder if I could have won more earlier what I could have done at the end."

s

Kotooshu (9-6) losing to Okinoumi

-----------------------------------------

(Didn't realize the gyoji's call and kept going.)

"When I thought I won, I actually have lost it. The only thing I can tell you is I should not get beaten by a Hiramaku rikishi like today from now on."

Kisenosato (10-5) over Harumafuji by tsukiotoshi, 11.2 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------

(Earning Shukun-sho and beating Harumafuji after exchanging powerful throws and hits.)

"I was going against him with everything I had. Obviously he would not let me win that easily."

(On seeing his two rivals Kotoshogiku and Kakuryu both aiming for ozeki promotion next basho while he accumulated his 20th Sanyaku Basho this basho.)

"This is the time to gain more strength and face the Aki. I want to do all I can and show my best under pressure."

Harumafuji (14-1) losing to Kisenosato

-------------------------------------------------

(Desperately wanting to finish the basho with no loss record but after fierce battles, fell down by tsukiotoshi.)

"I actually thought I won but my foot slipped. It has been all my flow. I just couldn't believe I lost it. But then we both put out everything we had on the dohyo today, so I can settle with it. But obviously I don't like the result at all."

(On challenging for yokozuna promotion at the Aki Basho)

"Now that I have given the opportunity, I want to do all my best by training really hard."

(After finishing the yusho photo holiding the cup)

"It does have a weight. It's the best feeling. From now on I want to aim for the yusho every time out."

Hanaregoma oyakata

--------------------------

(On Harumafuji)

"He is one of the rikishi, I expect to be in the yusho race every basho. I believe if he can display sumo like he did this basho, he should be."

(On Harumafuji's yusho promotion)

"Obviously the question is what will happen if he wins the yusho or a runner-up to the yusho next basho."

Baruto (11-4) over Hakuho by uwatenage, 7.9 sec

-----------------------------------------------------------------

(Beaten Hakuho for the second time in the past 20 encounters.)

"It was so riveting. It was really a good bout. I have been able to learn a lot from it actually."

Hakuho (12-3) losing to Baruto

---------------------------------------

(Suffering his first three bout loss basho since Hatsu Basho last year by easily thrown by Baruto's uwate-nage. Asked if he could not focus after losing the yusho to Harumafuji.)

"I guess there is some truth to that as well. After all I am a human too. I could not sustain the same level of intensity till the end."

(On missing the yusho this basho)

"I did realize that some day I would lose the yusho. It's just that I never expected it would be this basho. But the basho is over now so I won't leave here with any regret."

Hanaregoma oyakata. Kyokai chairman

-----------------------------------------------

(On this basho)

"Overall I feel now all rikishi have became fully aware of what we needed to overcome and accomplish. We are seeing more and more of excellent display of sumo. Today I felt the people who came to see us went home well satisfied. If we could keep presenting competitive basho like today, I have no doubt we will have more people coming to see us."

(On declining attendance)

"We had to postpone the start date of ticket sales so while I admit we are disappointed but perhaps it could not have been helped. I do believe as long as we keep presenting high quality competition, the fans will come back to the arena."

(Today was the only day with Maiiin-Onray this basho, marking the fewest sold out day in the Nagoya's history. Overall the ticket sale was down by 20% this year.)

Tomozuna oyakata, Director of Nagoya Basho Operations

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I can say all rikishi have done their very best. All of the staff have done a tremendous job. As a basho, I am well satisfied as everything went smoothly without any troubles. I believe we have made our first significant step towards the renewal and gaining trust back from the public."

Takanohana oyakata, Director of Judging

----------------------------------------------

(On two promising ozeki candidates next basho - Kotoshogiku with 21 win and Kakuryu with 22.)

"We will certainly be watching their progress carefully next basho."

The Sansho Selection Committee awarded Shukun-sho to Kotoshogiku who defeated Yokozuna Hakuho this basho. Homasho received Kanto-sho for fifth time while there was no rikishi qualified for Gino-sho for the first time in six basho.

Shukun-sho: Kotoshogiku (2)

Kanto-sho: Homasho (5)

Juryo Yusho:

---------------

Myogiryu - West 12, Real name: Yasunari Miyamoto from Hyogo Prefecture. Sakaigawa Beya. 24 years old. Entered Ozume at the 2009 Natsu Basho as the Makushita 15 Tsukedashi. Juryo debut: 2010 Hatsu Basho. 187 tall, 138 kg. Favorite: oshi.

Miyamoto went to famed Saitama Sakae High and was a runner-up when his team mate and team captain Goeido became High School Yokozuna. Miyamoto opted to go to Nihon University and became its captain and became College Yokozuna before joining Ozumo.

"The most gratifying thing was to get 11 wins. I was moving so well this basho. There wer some bouts I fell forward so I will be especially training to strenthen my lower body."

Sandanme Yusho:

--------------------

Amuru (7-0) - West 3. Won over Kasugaryu of Kasugayama Beya at the yusho kettei-sen today. Real name: IVANOV Nikolai Yuryevich from Russia. Onomatsu Beya. Dohyo debut: 2002 May Basho. 27 years old, 192 cm tall, 122 kg. Favorite: Hidari-yotsu, yori.

"I only kept thinking to go with my own sumo style every day. I have not had any close bout to speak of as I won all bouts with a moving-forward style of sumo. I want to train much harder to get to Juryo as quickly as possible."

Jonokuchi Yusho:

--------------------

Sakumayama (from Tokyo), West 5, over Sasanoyama (from Aomori) at the yusho kettei-sen. Both rikikshi are from Kitanoumi Beya and made their dohyo debut last basho. Takayuki Sakuma is 22 years old and 181 cm tall, 151 kg. Favorite: Migi-yotsu, yori.

"Everyone kept telling me I would get the yusho prior to the basho and it put a lot of addtional pressure on me. I did quite a bit of training sessions against Makushita level rikishi prior to the basho. I want to became a rikishi who could compete both offesively and defensively, a complete all around rikishi."

On Day 13, Makushita Yusho was won by Oguruma Beya's Naoe who won all his seven bouts and to become the first Waseda University grad to make Juryo in seventy eight years. Jonidan Yusho was won by Maenofuji of Takadagawa Beya.

Tomozuna oyakata, former ozeki Kaio's shisho, indicated that Kaio's Retirement Sumo to be held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan on May 27 next year. Kaio retired this basho to become Asakayama oyakata.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This guy is really something. Every time he is Maegashira 10402 he wins more than ten and he "learned something and will carry this to the next basho". Then he climbs to the "Joi Division" and ends up winning three. And so it goes every other basho, a souped-up Kyokutenhou.

They should add another prize - the Homa-sho for best yoyo rikishi, which he would have won hands down this basho.

That being said, he's a nice kid.

Joe, your rikishi-talk posts are priceless and much appreciated but working only on the weekends can have bad side effects... What about every other day at least?? Your fans await!

Totally seconded here. He just can't on weekdays with a long commute as he told us here I believe. So your last sentence gets a new meaning - we can hardly await his retirement from work. (Sign of approval...)

Thanks, team, for your comment.

I will strive to do my best next basho, hopefully a little bit shortened version on weekdays.

Aside from Homer-(non)Show, the Times They Are a-Changin' in Ozumo (not that Kaio is now off the chart) but other veterans already showing a sign of deterioration - T'Sakari, A'Minisky, K'Tenho, A'Sekiyu etc and some are sneaking up the hierarchy like Okinoumi so hopefully the Kyokai can get their act together and will provide us with more to talk about for the rest of this year. At least if we can get Kise and Shogiku not to collapse now.

Addendum:

Record:

Kisenosato - Consecutive Makuuchi appearence: 600 (third most among active riksihi, the most is by Kyokutenho with 720)

Note: If we get yokozuna and ozeki promotion after the basho, it will be the first time since the 1993 Haru Basho when Akebono and Takanohana (subsequently yokozuna) were promoted. If we have two ozeki promotions after the basho, it will be the first time since 1994 Haru Basho when Musashimaru and Takanonami were promoted to ozeki. Since I do remember both, not only time flies quickly but I feel getting older by minute.

Thank you, Joe, for posting these all the time. You are a true yokozuna here! (A yokozuna...) I reposted the last two days to the mailing list since this was, indeed, an interesting basho.

Random fact that I'm hopefully not screwing up: Homasho has already set a modern-era record with four M1 appearances without reaching sanyaku, and might extend it to 5 basho in Aki. Everybody else since 1927 either reached sanyaku after 1-3 basho at M1, or never had a fourth such basho. (Kotoryu is among the small handful of rikishi who were M1 three times and couldn't take the next step.)

For another rikishi who appeared four times at M1 before reaching sanyaku one has to go back to just before the modern era began, namely this guy. And of course he at least did reach sanyaku, which Homasho has yet to do.

Another record held by Homasho is that of most sansho by a rikishi who hasn't reached sanyaku - seven!! Two Gino-sho and five Kanto-sho from 31 basho so far.

The previous record holder was Tokitsuumi, who won four Gino-sho from 50 basho.

Nearest active challenger is Toyohibiki, with three Kanto-sho from 21 basho.
