SumoGames.com server planned outage ended (finally)

Recommended Posts

I'll be taking down the sumogames web server to allow me to transfer all the databases while I am sure there are no updates going on. It will likely be off line for a few hours while all the copying takes place. Once it's back on line, it will be on the new server. BenchSumo, ChainGang, ISP, RotoSumo and Sekitori-Toto will be a bit longer as they will be running on a virtual server and it may take a while to figure out how best to forward the requests from the real server to the virtual. Once the updates are done, the old server will be moved to another location and kept as a warm backup.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sumoreference is back on line (with Hoshitori & GTB) as is www.sumogames.com including Golynohana's games. The games I administer will follow over the weekend. First Juryo Game and Maegashira, then BenchSumo, ChainGang, ISP, RotoSumo and Sekitori-Toto once I figure how to pass through to the virtual server.

I still haven't got everything sorted out yet. Still fighting with the proxy to get to the virtual server without having to add the port into the URL for everyone. Was a frustrating day yesterday with a flakey internet at both ends.

I think we are ready to start receiving entries for most games. I'll try to load banzukes and respond to game administrators requests in the next 24 hours. Chaingang's DNS entry wasn't quite right so may take a while to propagate the final change.

Please only use the (game).sumogames.com URL ... that's the only one that's pointing to the right spot.

http://benchsumo.sumogames.com

http://chaingang.sumogames.com

http://isp.sumogames.com

http://rotosumo.sumogames.com

http://sekitoto.sumogames.com

Good luck!

Thanks for the effort Kofuji, superb (Showing respect...)

I usually access the games using this link http://www.strongoak.net/sb/

Gave it a try just now and all the sites are working (Clapping wildly...)

Maybe it is because Kofuji is currently tinkering, but I now get the following message for all the games sites listed above:---

Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

There will be no confirmation mail this basho. I don't have time to figure out why it works when you test it and doesn't work from the programs.

BenchSumo may not run this basho. Too much works for what isn't not to. For some reason I'm not able to debug and my back up VB programming machine has died. If I can't get it working in about an hour this evening, I'm afraid for the first time in over a decade we may have to miss a BenchSumo basho.

Many of us have survived a couple of basho without benchsumo. I don't mind much if we wait until the Aki basho.

On the other hand, we could probably organize ourselves to do a manual basho if we had to. If the daily gyoji can receive daily entires to their email and someone can be responsible for receiving the basho entries to be made public once the basho starts, we could limp along and emerge with a set of results. The results might not always be timely but we would have a record of our competition once the dust settled.

I think the torikumi makers job would be difficult as they may not have the information they need to make wise pairings in the latter days of the tournament.

What is the sentiment out there? Can we do a basho without the automation?

We actually did it for a while till the automation was born, and we did it well, IIRC..

Yes, when Bench sumo was just one or two divisions, we used to do it all without automation.

However, for this basho, there are several problems....

1. I will be away for most of the basho, so won't be able to do much.

2. We are very much understaffed for day-to-day gyojis - so as things stand, we probably couldn't cover all the divisions, every day, manually.

3. It is such a long time (over ten years) when we last did it manually, that most players / gyojis have not experienced this method - and those that have, have probably forgotten.

4. The official entry deadline is less than 48 hours away. This would be very important, due to the extra work that would be required to set things up on a manual basis, so could not really be extended. This is probably too short a time to get things done.

5. I can see that it would all end up being 'rather messy'.

(6. Actually, I don't think the torikumi makers would have too much of a problem.)

Therefore, I think that unless Kofuji has the chance to save the day at the very last minute, Bench Sumo may well be taking a one-basho hiatus....

I don't know...my impression is that most schedule makers are keeping their own bout matrixes anyway, given that repeated bouts were apparently quite rare even before the automation was improved to reject them a couple of years ago. (With one notable exception of course.) So that might be the least of problems, as Jejima says.

Slightly bigger might be the issue of calculating the results, but I suspect that can be handled with a bit of Excel magic. The biggest question mark would be whether it's even possible to submit entries. A situation like in the last S4 basho on hakkeyoi.net in 2006 (entries still possible, just the results routine busted) would probably be possible to work through. If Bench was back to emailed entries for everyone, however...ack, don't wanna think about it too much.

Just tried and received

Server Error

500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

Just another small bug or is Nagoya basho done now?

EDIT: Silly me... forgot to use http://benchsumo.sumogames.com as mentioned by Kofuji. This worked, I'm registered (Clapping wildly...) Well done, Bob (Showing respect...)

Everything is working great except Maegashira game-I can't register.

BTW, all Japanese games are up as well. Everyone should try those and make our presence felt..

You should be able to register for Maegashira Game (and if you haven't tried it yet, please do!). I was able to register my kyujo. There was an issue with security checking the torikumi, but I just corrected it.

I only get the IIS 7 screen for benchsumo.sumogames.com

Try reloading the page - it worked for me.
