Vikanohara 171 Posted May 18, 2011 So far, Okinoumi has won from all Ozeki this basho. But he still has Baruto left, and will face him in a few hours. Will he also capture this trophy ? After taking off 0-3 this basho with first two losses against Takekaze & Wakanosato, he was still far from possible Sanyaku talks. But now, with only being defeated by Hakuho since those opening days, he has shown great skills once again, after already that Jun-Yusho & Kanto-Sho in Hatsu 2011. Who would have thought that after 4-11 & 5-10 in Juryo following his 7-0 only (Makushita) Yusho. He's a bit of a weird case, actually.

He was competing with massive shoulder tapings in those two juryo failures. The results weren't really a surprise once we saw how injured he clearly was at the time, and I don't think anyone took them as a sign of things to come. Pippooshu 1 Posted May 18, 2011 I remember the words of Asashoryu during an old De-Geiko: "Okinoumi has the structure to become a champion".
Vikanohara 171 Posted May 18, 2011 So he lost from Baruto, but not that it came as a surprise to me. Still I'm interested in how he's going to finish this basho. And as for the injury in his Juryo debut, I didn't know. I don't get to watch a lot of sumo, only interpreting results. And they don't report about injuries, just wins or losses. Keishikazawa 0 Posted May 18, 2011 I think Okinoumi is not quite ready for sanyaku yet. The fact that he beat Kaio, Kotooshu, and Harumafuji this basho doesn't really say a lot. That being said I don't see any reason he can't hang in at joi for a basho or two. I would bet he'll be up there by Kyushu. Or I could be completely off base and he could go 10-5 and jump to komusubi, then start an ozeki run.
Kaikitsune Makoto 206 Posted May 19, 2011 Okinoumi is powerful, has good height (190cm), evidently does good keiko and is now healthier. He had lower back problems and shoulder problems. He has beefed up quite a lot in the last year or so (definitely over 150kg clearly now) and resembles Tokusegawa in many ways. He can generate a lot of power which has been shown well this basho also in bouts he lost (like the one against Baruto) and also has good sumo senses and skills. Ex-Chiyotaikai commented today he looks forward to seeing how strong he will become eventually. He has all the ingredients at least and is only 25 years old. He doesn't have striking weaknesses as far as I can see. Room for refinement and further development for sure.
Vikanohara 171 Posted January 15, 2012 He's letting me down this basho. (Showing respect...)
Kintamayama 44,646 Posted January 15, 2012 He's letting me down this basho. (Showing respect...) He could be injured, but also could be out of his element more than usual.
Rōnin 0 Posted January 15, 2012 He's letting me down this basho. (Showing respect...)I'm shocked at how poorly he has proven so far. I'm at a loss for what's going on with him, he should be doing much better than this. ;-)
Vikanohara 171 Posted January 18, 2012 Perhaps he wants to taste some lower Maegashira again before rushing forward again ? ;-)
Vikanohara 171 Posted November 12, 2012 Now that's what I was talking about ! B-)
IzumoTaisha 2 Posted November 13, 2012 Okinoumi is my hero, flying the flag for my beloved Shimane, great to see him becoming more confident and stronger even against the bigger names.
