May basho to be broadcast in full on the internet

Recommended Posts

Too important to be buried in the existing thread:

Popular Japanese video portal Nico Nico Doga has announced that they will be carrying live broadcasts of the entire action of the May basho, showing everything from jonokuchi at 8:30 in the morning to the end of makuuchi. The broadcast will be available from the rather professionally-looking Live section, only requiring registration of a free account. (You can register at the German, Spanish or beta English versions of the site if you don't want to go through the Japanese-language sign-up process.)

This broadcast will likely resemble the standard web stream, but in higher quality. Additionally, the Kyokai's own broadcast will be back to featuring both juryo and makuuchi (reportedly also in about "three times better quality" - not sure if this refers to resolution, bitrate, or both), and will be pepped up with on-screen graphics and live commentary, to be provided by the crew that normally does the Kokugikan in-house FM radio broadcast (which has been suspended for this basho) along with oyakata guests.

Further places to catch the (sekitori) sumo will be the Kyokai's for-pay mobile platform, and HikariTV, an (among other things) IPTV service run by the Kyokai's tech partner NTT that they are planning to use to bring the broadcast to various quake refugee sites.

Let's just hope this continues if and when NHK returns..

I'd gladly pay Nicovideo's 525 yen monthly premium fee for this alone, I know that much. Well, if it comes with a reasonable non-live viewing option, which this free offering doesn't, I think.

If you use Firefox, you can download videos using something like NicoFox Download Manager.

http://nicofox.softpedia.com/

I've used it for regular NicoNico videos, but never on a live stream, so not sure what would happen for that...

This is great news. I'll be able to watch some of the young lads during my evenings here in Atlanta.

Somebody knows if it's possible to see the nikoniko livebroadcast afterwards? In France the day of a basho happen between 1 to 10 in the morning. So... Difficult to be aware all night.

Don't know if there is a record broadcast or not.

I'm not sure. There's a time-shift feature, but it seems to come with large restrictions (needs to be requested by each user before the broadcast?)...I can't quite make sense of it.

Watching in disbelief. INCREDIBLE!!! I must have been one of the first in..Can't be true, but it is-just some yobidashi sweeping the dohyo, not a soul in the arena

but who cares!! Quality excellently perfect. Not getting sound, though, but maybe it's me.

Edit-no sound because nobody is saying anything.. 45 minutes till the first bout so I'll probably go to sleep..

Sound pretty low for anybody else? My notebook has good speakers but I'm having to turn up the volume controls to 100% both on the player and in Windows to get a decent level... (I typically need to have the Windows slider at only 25% for anything else.)

Edit: Think they just bumped it up, the last PA gyoji announcement came in much louder.

Sound is fine here, but I had to turn the volume up as well. Maybe you have headphones with an integrated volume shifter, that might help.

The chatbox could be a nice tool for commenting on the bouts, but there is so much traffic. Posts fly by within a second. Is it possible to change the font color, so user form this forum can seperate themselves visually for communication purposes?

The novelty of the chatbox wore off quite quickly as the sheer volume of chats became unbearable. I shut it off by clicking the comment box.

I don't know if it's just for today, but there's a Windows Media stream (640x360, 600 kbit) going via the Kyokai site, too. The 'no broadcast' placeholder page does say it's supposed to be up 09:00 to 18:00 JST every day, too. Shikona and W-L graphics are being displayed. Link's the same as always, and available as usual from the 'yes broadcast' placeholder page.

They just came out with a clickable message on-screen that took me to today's Jonidan torikumi in Japanese. Little did they know we already have that in English since yesterday (and have had that for many bashos now...) courtesy of Naganoyama.. (I am not worthy...)

Furthermore, they are saying that Juryo and upwards will have Oyakata commentary as well. It is the same feed as niconico but lagging a few seconds behind, at least here.

Well, we knew that. (I am not worthy...) But until now it seemed that the in-house stream would also only become available from juryo.
