11 posts in this topic

Tosanoumi and Iwakiyama's danpatsushikis slated for May 28th and 29th respectively, will probably be postponed. "Since these investigations are going on, we'll decide by the end of the week," said Iwakiyama's guys, while Tosanoumi's camp is planning to postpone it till January.

His danpatsu is coming up, but unrelated to that Iwakiyama was profiled by Sankei Shimbun as part of their "Living with illness" series recently. Looks like he's dropped quite some weight since his cerebral infarction-induced retirement from active competition:

ex-Iwakiyama's (Sekinoto Oyakata) danpatsushiki was held today at the KKan. 250 snippers. He is 40 kilos thinner than when active and is a coach at Sakaigawa beya. He retired after it was discovered he had a serious head injury and is still visiting the hospital on a regular basis. "The top of my head feels very light after a long time," he said after his mage was removed. "I'd like to raise rikishi who care about the content of their sumo rather than only winning," he summed.

I always liked these two. I hope Iwakiyama gets better.

Iwakiyama was one of my favourite old generation rikishi. Tochinonada and Kyokutenho also. Will "survive" Tenho also...

Today was Tosanoumi's (Tatekawa Oyakata) danpatsushiki at the Kkan. 357 snippers. He had 11 kinboshis, 4th most ever, 13 sanshos, 7th most ever. At some point he was even a candidate for Ozeki. "I used to be involved in a lot of upsets.. It's finally over.. Even after the postponement, I was able to embark on a new journey.. I have no regrets and feel refreshed.." he said.

With Major League player Takashi Saito- "Hey, hey, my hair is up there, man!!"
