ilovesumo 12 Posted February 6, 2011 I see!!! But I thought you get your diploma, aren't you through?? Is it about the Egyptian boy? Anyway you never know, by April things may calm down!!! Tonight I got phone calls non-stop from the boys. Most of them so depressed... but ever so hopeful that some normalcy will return to their lives now that the basho is cancelled and they are not the focus of the investigations, that they can go forward with keiko.. albeit with no site of any money until end of May... (well except for the sekitori I talked with who will go forward with keiko and pay!) IF there is anyone thinking this doesn't affect the boys that much let me tell you that a few boys on the phone tonight were in tears!!!! And I don't accuse them of being weak, just heart broken. Some of them hometown basho, the only time their parents see them... AND they are MAD at those involved in the scandal!!!! Hmmm me too!! Who said M.A. was the ultimate goal? (Lifting weights...) Even some Oyakata are heat broken now...and full of fear.
sekihiryu 51 Posted February 6, 2011 JSA acts swiftly to cancel tourney, confuses ministry However, such action apparently has confused the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry, with one senior official saying Saturday, "The NSK hasn't told us anything.".......Taken aback by the JSA move, the ministry appears to instead believe that a decision should not be made on whether to cancel the tournament until the investigation ends - "Unless the investigation is carried out properly to reveal the whole picture, [the JSA] won't win public understanding," Senior Vice Minister Kan Suzuki said. Interesting comments from the Govt. I got the impression they were breathing heavily down their necks, but it seems the decision was wholly the Kyokai acting alone. nonews 0 Posted February 7, 2011 here we go again. like nhk sumo assosiation thinks the throwing of matches can be solved by canceling bashos and other events. the throwing of matches for money or just to help out someone will never end. it will always be with sumo and any other sport or game. anyone who thinks this kind of thing can be resolved is living in a dream world. again the lowest of the ranks and the public gets punished for something nobody can fix. glad i'm not there anymore. Canceling the basho is not about solving the problem. It's an acknowledgement that you can't have a basho until the problem is solved.

IMO, unfortunately, I don't think they will solve this problem the way Hanaregoma wants it. That is 100%. Get real, you can't totally get rid of Yaocho, in Sumo or anything else for that matter. Welcome to the real life! :-)
Chiyozakura 130 Posted February 8, 2011 While I can understand the decision to cancel the basho I wonder when they will declare the problem solved. You will never be able to proof that yaocho does not occur anymore. Whenever a 7-7 rikishi wins has last bout against somebody who does not need the win to improve his rank it will look fishy. The same goes for an Ozeki in danger of going make koshi against an already kachi koshi Ozeki. An these are just the obvious ones. The current scandal is about matches where the importance of the outcome does not meet the eye directly. If the case is further investigated and no proof is found it can be interpreted the way that the others were just smart enough not to get caught. There is just too much trust destroyed. Vikanohara 171 Posted February 22, 2011 I only found out just now about the cancellation, as I was about to check at what date the next basho would start. Still all to do with the gambling scandal ? And possibilities of nu sumo basho until fall ? Oh my, you can't be serious ! (Blushing...)
Asashosakari 18,786 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) In order to reduce non-combat fatigue (as it were), Tokitsukaze-ichimon will reportedly hold a big 5-day group training session starting March 13, the original shonichi of the cancelled basho. All rikishi, gyoji and yobidashi ranked sandanme and above are scheduled to take part; due to the large number of participants the ichimon will be using the big keikoba of the sumo school at the Kokugikan. Asashosakari 18,786 Posted February 26, 2011 I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but according to a Sports Hochi report from a day ago the Kyokai wants to publish the March rankings on Monday after all, with two caveats: Only juryo and makuuchi, and not as a banzuke, i.e. presumably just the ranking data. The revised lower division rankings will only be distributed to the stables as originally intended.

If they are to publish anything including giving the rankings to the heya it will be out everywhere anyway.. They might as well publish it all in full or not publish anything and I think if the heya and boys know everyone will know in time.... ilovesumo 12 Posted March 11, 2011 Through serendipity, the Kyokai had perfect timing for canceling a basho. Nobody cares about sumo right now... Had that discussion with a forum-friend today - why not doing a "jungyo" in Sendai in the next days - Rikishi helping to clean up. That would help the image. But people there need help and they shouldn't see it as image-make over in first place but as what it is - doing work that has to be done. - remember the shame many non-related rikishi reported about? Now this shame can be erased, doing something for others who are in need.

Maybe in a month or so they'd be welcome, but right now their presence is as welcome as a clown at uncle Frank's funeral. Have to agree with Peterao here. The only people who need transferring in right now are search-and-rescue teams and people capable of providing medical and technical assistance to get the infrastructure back up and running. Nobody needs a bunch of rikishi running around the place...what could they possibly do that the unfortunate thousands of locals trapped in the area can't do for themselves? sekihiryu 51 Posted March 13, 2011 indeed keep the rikishi out of it. If anything get them to work in Tokyo with anything that needs helping, Volunteering for the red cross, making care packages to go up etc. Also: Haru basho my be cancelled but the whole Shikoroyama beya came down to Nara last weekend and had their annual chanko event in the local shotengai and meet with all their sponsors. token gesture but appreciated by the locals for sure.
