Day 6 results and day 7 pairings

Recommended Posts

Shotenro lost without much of a fight to Tokitenku, giving his compatriot and six more rikishi a share of the 5-1 lead, most prominently Hakuho, Baruto and Kaio. Three rikishi got their second loss in a bout between two of the pursuers, while Okinoumi and Tochiozan lost to the tough opponents Miyabiyama and Kisenosato to fall to 4-2. Kakuryu, Aran and Tochinoshin all lost to make it a blackout for the lower sanyaku today. Hakuba got his first win of the basho over Kotokasuga, so all active makuuchi rikishi have at least one win now.

It's different in juryo where still one rikishi is undefeated with Sakaizawa, and one rikishi is without a win with Jumonji. Kaisei missed the chance to stay in the joint lead, getting slapped to the side from experienced Toyozakura. Speaking of experience, Tamanoshima routinely got an oshidashi win against Chiyohakuho, but Tosanoumi fell to Toyohibiki like only he can, and I am beginning to doubt if he can reach 100 sekitori basho as this is his 97th. An immediate demotion for Jumonji is beyond reasonable doubt and while I don't think the 34 years old rikishi can mount another comeback. He already proved me wrong before, winning the makushita yusho in the marred Nagoya basho but before that only had small make-koshi while now he's 0-6 coming after a 4-11.

Hakuba got his first win of the basho over Kotokasuga, so all active makushita rikishi have at least one win now.

I know he hasn't looked good, but that's not a nice thing to say about Hakuba. (Eh?)

Maybe he's just trying to get into good position for another makushita yusho... Seriously though, I didn't even think Jumonji would return the first time (after his Kyushu 2007 demotion), let alone the second time this year, so I won't rule him done yet. He's always had these occasional tournaments where he'd look completely feeble and passive, even back to his makuuchi years. Some type of recurring back issue used to be my guess...

Sakaizawa says: "Who needs offense?"

Akiseyama-Sadanoumi...I believe the medical diagnosis of this bout would be "hnghnghngh". One of the more lively four-minute bouts I've seen:

On day 6's English broadcast, Murray called the bout between Asofuji and Shironoryu "very interesting". Did anybody see it who could tell me what was remarkable about it?
